In reply to: Vive Skyrim issues

That is indeed unusual. With medium to high settings you normally should get 40fps+ with your system in most parts of the map with a few dips below that (~30) here and there in towns and areas with dense vegetation. Everything below that is definitely not normal.

If you use an older Skyrim install, please first and foremost follow the above advice and try a fresh install without mods. Also semi popular graphics enhancing ini-tweaks (uGridsToLoad etc.) reduce performance severely. So make sure you don’t use anything like that.

Also don’t use the “Ultra” graphics preset in the Skyrim options. Try “High” or even “Medium”. The latter shouldn’t be necessary though.

    Hi,

I just got up and running with the Oculus Rift CV1 which so far works only with the stuff in the Oculus store – Lucky’s Tale and Elite.

I purchased VorpX the other day because I want to play the Far Cry games on the Oculus. I have tried Far Cry 3, 4 and Primal, as well as GTA5, but nothing works so far.

The issue is that although the VorpX watcher agent runs hapilly in the system tray but otherwise does nothing. It doesn’t seem to hook into or affect any games at all. When I start a game, it just runs on my monitor as usual. When I put the Rift on, all I see is the white grid room with a message. Usually the message says either:

    (a) Please wait.
    (b) The file farcry***.dll is taking a long time to load. Please wait.

The game I launch continues to play as normal on my monitor. I have closed all other apps, and I don’t have any AntiVirus software installed. I tried DX9 and DX10 modes in games. Still nothing happens.

    Machine spec is as follows:

      Intel Core i7 6950X
2 x nVidia 1080 Founders edition (in SLI)
      M.2 SSD for boot
WD Black HDD where the games are installed (custom path)
      Asus 4K G-Sync Monitor
      Windows 7 x64 (Sorry, I hate Windows 10!)
Latest version of Oculus and VorpX

I have some dumb noob questions to start with:

    1. Am I supposed to only run the VorpX watcher and start the game as normal? Or should I do something else to invoke it?

    2. Am I supposed to drop my screen resolution to match the Rift, from 4K to HD?

    3. Do I need to wear the Rift before launching the game?

    4. Is something supposed to appear in the Oculus library/window? Or perhaps in the Rift virtual library?

    5. Is it because I have SLI?

    6. Is it because I have a 4K monitor?

    7. Is it because I like Windows 7? :)

    8. Is it because I installed the games in a custom path? I read something about creating a VorpX shortcut. Do I need to do that?

I would really appreciate any help. I spent rather a lot of money on everything :)

    Many thanks,
    Dave

You can use any resolution you want. Try 1600×1200 or 1920×1440 if your PC can handle that for the best possible image quality. The default recommendation of 1280×1024 is a compromise between quality and performance.

If you are seeing a screen in front you in full VR mode, you probably have changed the Image Zoom setting on the image page of the vorpX menu. Please make sure to reset the Image Zoom to the default 1.0 and the aspect mode to Pixel 1:1.

These are the defaults for Skyrim, and with these settings the whole image is filled, so you are fully in the game. If you already tweaked a lot, it might make sense to restore the default profile in the config app.

Instead of using image zoom, set the game’s field of view (FOV) to the value suggested for your headset. in Skyrim that is particularly easy. You just have to click the “Adjust FOV” button on the main page of the vorpX ingame menu.

In regard to performance please make sure to use an unmodded Skyrim and do not use any performance degrading ini tweaks (uGridsToLoad etc.). Skyrim is a highly CPU intensive game, even more so with vorpX in Geometry 3D mode.

With an unmodded Skyrim and a recent CPU you should be able to get ~50fps in most parts of the map with dips below that in towns (especially Whiterun).

If you want to enhance your framerate significantly beyond that, change to Z-Buffer 3D in the vorpX menu. Doesn’t look as good, but is a lot faster.

OK, made a little bit of progress. Super confusing, not 100% sure on what I’m doing, however, am getting closer in baby steps on this.

So I downloaded my copy of Thief II, The Metal Age. I’ve managed to get the menu screen going in my headset. However, the mouse and keyboard (HTC Vive controllers didn’t work at all) were not working in the game. The left click seemed to do nothing at all, while right clicking seemed to only work on my left monitor. The screen in my headset was beautiful and clear as it is on my monitor, but gargantuan and off to the left. None of the hotkeys to change those settings worked either.

But how I got to this little bit of progression was, starting VorpX, then running SteamVR, then running the game. After importing Thief 2, The Metal Age from the configure settings. Where I was going wrong when I read Ralf’s instructions on my other post was I was leaving the configure screen up and then running the VorpX picture viewer running. I thought that was what made VorpX work. Running the picture viewer.

So still haven’t gotten any game to run, but it’s a step in the right direction, hopefully some of this helps.

I’m with you. While I’ve gotten VorpX to start, and I can get the Desktop viewer to launch, I can’t get it to launch/attach for any game. All I get is the SteamVR home area (“This is REAL” with my Roomspace Grid) and that’s it. I’ve even disabled my second monitor while trying to run it in case that was causing issues as there’s no support for dual monitors.

Tried using it with Diablo 3 and if VorpX is running at all then Diablo 3 locks up when I hit “Play” in the battle.net launcher. Also as a shot in the dark I tried running it with other games like ARK and no go there. Pretty lost and confused as hitting “Start VorpX” as the instructions doesn’t seem to do anything.

Hi, I just bought Vorpx recently and it has worked well with some games and not so well with others, in Fallout 4 I have launched successfully and tweaked parameters but I can’t get Arma 3 to launch in my Oculus, it only displays on my T.V. I have my Oculus hooked into the HDMI port and my TV running on an adapter from a display port, and I am running windows 7. I tried to make the rift my primary display, but my computer only sees my T.V. as a display option, not the oculus. I don’t have this problem with Mount and Blade, Chiv, or Fallout 4, so I deleted every Arma 3 folder on my computer and did a fresh install to no avail. All I see in the oculus is a white gridspace with my sensor while the game loads and plays on my monitor. The only thing that happens is once the arma3 client begins to load, the oculus flickers to black for a split second but then returns to the white empty space. I have read through the trouble shooting and I have no idea what the problem is.

*edit – I have also tried running the game both with steam VR on and with it off, neither seems to help.

I also was able to optimize the settings with the config optimizer but it doesn’t seem to help the game launch on the oculus either. If you could suggest some solutions or places to check I would appreciate it as I would really enjoy playing Arma 3 and Vorpx has worked fine out of the box with other games I own. Thanks.

Sorry for the wait on a reply. The profile I used was from Bioshock, and getting it working is a little tricky. I’ve installed the latest Oculus stuff, so even though the DK2 is unsupported it still loads starts up its own interface in the rift display. The steps I follow are:

    – start Oculus software
    – start vorpx – will cause rift display to go to this loading grid screen, giving some warning about some crap.
    – immediately start Tesla effect while the grid screen is up on the rift, and focus the pointer on the button to accept the warning.

maybe 1-2 tries out of 5 will get it to hook successfully, and you should have all of the same profile options as Bioshock is allowed. I was going to try to upload it to this cloud functionality thing, but vorpx just updated (yay) but seems I’ve lost the profile (boo). Anyway, best of luck. Thanks for the info on Tridef, tried that back when DK1 was out, didn’t know they were keeping it updated with the oculus software changes. I’ll have to check it out.

Hi Ralph, thanks for the ‘heads up’!
JoeMoore, i’m sorry mate, don’t have a clue what your talking about…

    @Ralph,
i’ve finally managed to launch rFactor, rFactor2 and also R6 Siege (not supported, just as test).

Now, here’s some more Q’s.. i’m not complaining here, just checking if that’s expected or i’m messing something (not that unusual :)

Q1 – the Oculus Home software/virtual menu will allways start everytime i kick a game’s exe. Even if i close it’s tray icon, once i click either game or vorpx game shortcut it opens the Oculus Home and the virtual menu on the HMD’s.. Is that okay?? Isn’t this stealling system resources? And that takes me to Q2

Q2 – all 3 mentioned games have very poor headtracking.. it feels like it’s snnaping on a grid or something, like 5FPS, it’s unbearable. And the DK2 loading icon keeps showing and the screen freezes like it’s struggling to process the thing.. wich can’t be with my specs! So, what’s going on here?

Q3 – Left and Right images are inverted in the HMD’s, it was particulary noticed in rF2. Right eye is getting left image and vice versa, and i don’t find any option to switch it. The in-game menu options for changing axis does nothing..
But the stereo is there, seems very promising, except for the L/R being messed up and the poor head tracking FPS. I mean, coming from PCARS on Steam VR, wich is smooth as silk, so far my short experience with vorpx hasn’t been.. the best :(

Q4 – last one… to run Steam games, Steam VR should be ON or not?? Some games like RaceRoom need a -vr launch setting to kick VR. Should i use such with vorpx?

Ralph, i get you’re VERY busy mate, but please try to follow the Q’s, it makes it a lot easier for me and others to LEARN stuff. I work in videogame industry and we’re just discovering the virtues of VR ;)

    Thanks!

PS – before someone asks about R6 Siege experience.. you can use your ‘nose’ as a pointer, but the image is too blurry (DK2) and theres zero stereo atm, all you get is headtracking and extra zoom for that special HS, but besides that, it’s not worthy… yet! (not vorpx problem here, game needs VR development)

Okay so I managed to install VorpX however it seems completely broken , whenever I launch games through Vorpx they now always open the oculus home menu , the game displays on my monitor and a black screen (usually before intro cinematics) will display on the rift , Nothing else loads or displays on the rift after that.

The game will be completely playable via monitor but not at all on the rift.

Also I managed to get another game to open up but with a different conclusion

I opened another game it displayed on my monitor perfectly but , I got like a oculus VR blank grid that displays which asks me to look at the center to accept and display my game , upon doing that it just loads forever and never displays the game

    am I missing something?

I’ve had run untrusted oculus services checked and unchecked still to no avail

It seems like anything related to oculus starts the oculus home viewer and from there on , VorpX does nothing except keep the blue light from my tracker on , games that ran before on unreal engine 4 just instantly crash , seems the only games I’m able to play are the ones just that come with the new 1.3 platform , nothing’s working on my end on the new update.

Developer went offline? no reply in last one week!! Sent a mail also. Wanted to confirm that you will have my money if u add Vive support especially with Games Skyrim , Need for Speed series and Grid 2, Titanfall etc!! I used Tridef 3d now but they dropped VR support fully, So its your chance to make use of the empty market Space!!! So bad for them and good for you!!!!

I have good news for you. You will be able to run tridef games in virtual desktop steam app. It support sbs games and you have head tracking from virtual desktop. tridef milked money and invested in something else. I am also waiting to hear that vive is supported here and I will play gladly for good work.

I was thinking about this and how it might be set up so it could be easily used and customized for each game without it being to over the top. I’m not a programmer but I was thinking on it anyway.

I’m thinking you could divide the screen into a grid as illustrated on the smash hit RAMBO The Video Game:

That way you could take the grid overlays coordinates for the areas of the HUD layer you want to move, and reassign them to a new coordinate on the same HUD layer. Sort of like a version of battleship if you will, swapping a blocks location to a new blocks location essentially. It might be easier to handle something like this then on like a per pixel base. Just an idea I had and thought it might help make this doable.

There is a mod for Skyrim:
    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/35154/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D35154%26preview%3D&pUp=1

It allows you to move around and resize the HUD elements. Its pretty awesome. I’m not sure how the guy who made it actually does all of it but might be worth checking into.

Ah, it worked with the vr mod for “autosport grid” by codemasters.

so this should not be a technical limitation.

but thank you for your answer!

Fantastic Rotorblade! Thanks very much. This specific method, launching with the x86 game through origin and disabling ingame worked a charm :D

I will have to tweak the game to work nicely now. Having a bit of an issue with the player flitting 180 degrees when using the left stick.

Most of my VorpX problems seem to relate to input.

Dood, that is fantastic that my suggested fix was able to help someone else out. Last night I spent more time in BF4 playing around with all the settings. VorpX has a lot of stuff to tinker with and I don’t fully understand yet. After tinkering around for a while I was able to tweak it to the least amount of strain on my eyes and to improve the fun with the view. I am going to have to go cruising the game settings area to try to find some suggestions.

I am wondering right now how you’re supposed to do the measurement calibration in VorpX with the lines/grid. Are you supposed to relax your eye’s and wait till the grids match up or do you adjust so theres the least amount of strain? Sorry for asking if this is said somewhere else.

    Hi there.
So, this is a duplicate from a post I made in another thread, but I thought maybe it might get more attention in it’s own thread, so here goes…
    ——
Initally I couldn’t get GRID running under VorpX at all, but after a bit of fiddling I got it going.
However I now have the problem that it is split in to two screens on both eyes of the rift.
It happened when I first pressed middle mouse and now every time I press middle mouse to go back to normal/rift view, it takes me out of the game and when I alt-tab to return to it, it’s still/back on 2 screens…

I’ve tried resetting it in the VorpX troubleshooter but it didn’t change things.

    Thanks for any help!
