For older games the rule is checking the currently available versions, which usually means Steam and GOG. There is no way to keep track of (or often even acquire) every potential CD/DVD version that might have been released in the past.

Please forgive my criticism, I would only partly agree with that because it would mean if steam or gog brings out a “newer version” which is the case for many games where they do some updating on use with Win7/8/10 for example, only that would be supported by vorpX. In my eyes it would only partly make sense because this would force a player to become a member of company XY. I think vorpX should work with the latest official version of the manufacturer, not the one from a company XY. In case of a downloadgame from gog or steam this is not an issue but for a purchased game CD from a supermarket for example.

Of coarse i agree with that not every older game-version can be kept eye on.

I am not shure if the GOG versions are very representative, i noticed when installing (i have the deluxe version with all add ons) it is recommended to install ALL add ons at first install because they update the main game to newer versions. ( at least for 3D visison that made a big difference ).

Real good news Ralf, thank you !

BTW: i came across this today , DX1-11 to openGL Wrapper. Couldnt that be a way to get all those old DX1-8 gamnes to work ?

NWN 1 is one of my favorite games, if not my favorite at all. Cant wait to see Linu again in VR !

I wonder how far back the OpenGL recognition of vorpX reaches, today i found Myth 3 in the attic from 2001 with openGL.

Thanks for explaining in detail Ralf, in understand. Hope the rest of vorpX will remain WIN7 compatible. (looking at all those older games which cant be run under WIN8/10 but are equipped with DX9)

How did you manage to convert from a DX8 title to VR ? May be you talk to Ralf about this secret ! (Thinking of the recent DGvoodoo discussion).

In the reddit forums i read the following.

I’ve used Virtual Desktop on Win7, and it’s fine. It doesn’t have good performance for more esoteric stuff like looking at Ansel images, or 3D video playback, because Win7 doesn’t support the latest desktop imaging APIs. For normal use as a launcher and modest web browsing, it works well,

Could the vorpX Desktop Viewer at least be used for “For normal use as a launcher and modest web browsing” under WIN7 ? (May be inofficial ? Or would that make no sense at all ?

Oh i understand. I was not updating yet to WIN 8 because i am afraid of many “older” games possibly not working anymore on that system.

So i am guessing there wouldnt be any other tool which can do that on WIn7.

Hey that was fast. Thanks for the hint. I read about that earlier in the forum but i didnt know what you were talking about. – Sadly i only have WIN7. Is there a reason that only Win8/10 is supported ?

I must correct my lst posting. Some savers have a nice 3D effect, try Skyrocket , Lattice for example in the largest possible screensize or fullVR. Dont run “plasma” when youve been drinking

PS: above i meant “… or a newer version of vorpx now allows while a saver is running pressing DEL and mousemoves while the ingame menu is active “

Either i must go to see the doctor or a newer version of vorpx now allows pressing DEL and mousemoves while the ingame menu is open on (at least openGL) Screensavers.

I was playing around with these free openGL savers http://www.reallyslick.com/screensavers/ and they look quite neat on the vive. No 3D effect but nice colours spinning around .

Interesting i had exactly the same issue, just in the oppsite way. The game was too jittery, when lowering the settings i was able to even out the headtracking but then it was too low.

so those who have some basic knowledge about 3d graphics and want to invest some time will also be able to get access to more powerful authoring features on request. Becoming a profile author will unlock almost everything that previously was only available in internal authoring builds.

Can we still have hope on this ?
