In reply to: The zoomed-in problem

One very important thing regarding the “zoomed in” effect, that almost everyone misses, including me, is calibrating IPD in vorpX’s ingame menu. So do calibrate your IPD following the on-screen instructions, trust me…it does wonders to the resulting image both for FOV and 3D depth and presence feeling.

I tried a few games like Crysis, Fallout 3, BF3, BF4 etc and no matter what methods I used for improving FOV, including FOV enhancement tools and vorpX’s FOV options and zoom, it still felt a bit “zoomed in”, especially on close range objects.
So after finishing the whole BF3 campaign using Flawless Widescreen set to max FOV, Letterbox 1 aspect ratio, 2D FOV-Enhancement and 85 % image zoom, I started BF4 (same settings) which had better 3D definition but after playing for a while, the “zoomed in” feeling became kind of annoying and broke the immersion. Besides that I also got some blurry vision for half an hour after playing, until my eyes readjusted.

Then I started messing with Calibrate IPD option from page 2 (display) and found that 64.00 which is the default average for most males was wrong, so I re-calibrated using the on-screen instructions and ended up at 60.75 where the cross was perfectly visible and most clear (I do not suffer from any vision issues, I see very sharp, near and far).I was stunned by the result as the “zoomed-in” issue was completely gone, the FOV was just like as in an Oculus native supported game like Alien Isolation or HL2. I was stunned even more when I instantly noticed a huge improvement to 3D depth, the distance from my face to every object in the 3D environment was very clear which is a huge boost for presence feeling. And after playing for a couple of hours without any pause, when I exited, the blurry vision was greatly diminished and it completely disappeared in 1-2 minutes.

So this is the most important thing to do besides setting the FOV. You might end up higher than me, closer to 62-63…in my case, might be the VR Cover cloth which I applied over the DK2 and puts a bit of higher distance between the lens and the eyes, although the VR native games didn’t gave me any problems with the 64 IPD default setting in Oculus profile. I’m not sure how that is possible, maybe it differs from one game to the next, but the result is amazing ;)

I bought this thinking I could play the games listed but calling this a vr 3d is pushing it.

All games are zoomed in so its impossible to go through the menu. Trying too zoom out via the “delete” menu works but takes away the vr feeling when it looks like the screeen is far away. Also the settings screen dissapears and can not be opened again. Only opens agin if I restart the game.

Tried BF4 = Doesn´t work. It also have som graphical glitches when I have klicked around without seeing anything and suddenly started the game.
Metro 2033, Last light redux = Same
FarCry = Crashes all the time but supposes it works like in the other games, Doesn´t work
COD: Advanced warfighter = see all above.

Tried the built in optimizer….. Did nothing.

All this driver does is showing the picture in the Rift. To bad it does it so bad.

I have gooled and searched forums but since the “delete” menu dissaperars it´t impossible to try.

Far Cry 4 loads fine for me but the view is zoomed in. What gives with that? How can I fix it? In fact every game I’ve tried on my DK 2 so far the view is too zoomed in…. I can’t look around.

I have gotten Portal 2 and FarCry 4 (sort of) but I cannot get skyrim, bioshock, or fallout nv working. I know that its not hooked in because I cannot get the in game menu to show up. it looks like the desktop does thru the rift. (zoomed in and offset to the sides a little) and head tracking wont work either.

Apparently there is some way to disable optimus with fn+f5 on Alienwares but that combination is muted and it is brightness control instead on my laptop >__< I don’t know how to disable optimus any other way either

    Alienware m14x R2
    Geforce 650m
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz
    8.00 gb RAM

For those who have read through the forum about how to get FarCry 4 to work with the newest version of VorpX, to no avail; I kicked myself after finding why I had your same problem:

    1. Start VorpX
    2. Pause VorpX
    3. Start FarCry 4
    4. Wait for the splash screen.
    5. Resume VorpX
    6. Game will start to load, and you will see it on your desktop monitor.
    7. Click on the loading window (I can see my task bar, still, at this point, and this gets rid of that).
    8. After FarCry 4 logs-in to your profile press any key and the display snaps to the Rift.

Of course, you might want to fiddle a bit with some minor display settings, as well as the look sensitivity and head tracking, but it works and looks great as-is.

My problem now is using the right stick on my 360 controller. I can’t get the damn thing to let me turn my body so I can face where I want to go. If anyone could help me out with this I would appreciate it!

For F1 games, (I’ve got 2012 and 2014) you need to have Open track for head tracking and to adjust the FOV I followed this tutorial: http://www.entertherift.fr/article-606-maj-tuto-f1-2012-13-et-dirt.html

As for myself, there are times vorpX doesn’t want to hook and restarting my computer helps. You said you have the Rift set to extended, do you also have it set as your primary monitor? Also, before I get into game, I don’t have the lens cups in. It makes it a lot easier to navigate around the desktop and get into the game. Once I am in game (going into time trial and a track to test head tracking in F1 for example) I’ll put in the lens cups and put on the Rift.

I procedure is to turn on the Rift, wait for my monitors to adjust and then start vorpX and if need be, Open track, then start>steam>game. It loads in the rift and the warning appears (even though I checked it not to) and I wait until I am through all the menus and into the game before putting in the lenses and playing.

I have little trouble with my games, though it is about 70% chance that head tracking will work in F1 without restarting my computer. Most other games work fine, though I did have an issue with Far Cry 4 locking the look stick so I couldn’t use that to help recenter the view. I couldn’t look left and then move the look stick as I straighten my head but still face left… which made me conscious of trying not to get tangled in the cord.

And there were a few times that I was so frustrated, especially at first, that I wanted to throw my computer through a window and rip out my hair. However, one day things just worked and I have no idea what I did… if some drivers updated, or I didn’t do something that I was previously… but all the black screens with audio, laggy jittery input, etc, was gone.

I do hope you get your issue resolved.

I have no troubles working vorpx with Steam:
    Borderlands 2
    Borderlands Pre-Sequel
    Chivalry
    DCS World
    F1 2012 (needs open track)
    F1 2014 (needs open track)
    Far Cry 4
    GTAIV
    Metro 2033
    Mirrors Edge
    Portal 2
    Outlast
    Skyrim
    Wolfenstein

    Alien Isolation (mod game file)
Test Drive Unlimited 2 (have 3D but no head tracking)

I also have the Mass Effect trilogy and Alan Wake but I haven’t tried those games yet. Except for the games marked, all work with vorpx’s head tracking.

    Hi
i have the newest vorpx update and the DK2.
When i start Far Cry 4 through the .exe vorpx wont activate.
I’m in extented mode and set the dk2 as primary display.

When i create a vorpx shortcut for far cry 4 and double click it, it appears a message which says that the Vorpx control is already running, and nothing happens than.

What can i do? Games like Outlast work fine.

    Greetings

I’m using windows 8.1, how do you get rid of the mouse cursor loading in Far Cry 3? It happens after I confirm the first vorpx notification in the dk2. It loads endlessly after then. Whereas in Skyrim, after I confirm the vorpx notification, I would simply click ‘ok’ on the rest and the mouse would disappear. Sorry, i’m pretty bad at explaining things.

    Hello Ralf,

Could we have the ability to change the mouse sensitivity to a different value while the Right Mouse Button is held down.

this would make a HUGE difference to many games, it would actually make some games go from unplayable to fully playable, at least in terms of full on head tracking.

if I can give an example, A perfect one would be the sniper scope in Far cry 3, it is unusable with headtracking as the sensitivity is just too low, in that case you can have your standard HT sensitivity say 1.0, then you can have an option in vorpx menu HT sensitivity w/RMB and that can be set to anything, lets say 2.0.

now in this case it is useable, this would also fix resident evil revelations mouse problems and the game would be playable with full headtracking.

In general a lot of games are kind of broke when it comes to using your head for weapon aiming if the weapons is using any kind of scope, even an assault rifle, its not all games, but many.

    Thanks

Far Cry 4 looks great with vorpx!! But two things don´t work very well on my system.

First the right stick from my controller (XBox 360 emulates) does respond laggy (turning view).

And, after the game has to load a new area, there is unpredictable stuttering.

    System rig:

    i5 4670k szandard clock
    nvidia 780 GTX
    8 GB Ram

Anyone else got rid of that?

Maybe i might have not enough RAM, er?

Somebody with 16 GB wit the same problem (#2)?

    Hi Adam!

Don’t give up, it will surely work!

The main reason, why the game crashes at startup, use to be, that you are online! Please note, that when I say “offline mode” it doesn’t only refer to choosing “launch the game in offline mode” on the HUD when you are already in the game, but it also refers to Uplay! So, before launching Far Cry 4 exe file, launch Uplay first, and switch online mode to OFFLINE! VorpX won’t work otherwise and the game immidiatelly crashes in online mode.

To those, who either have a startup crash problem OR the problem, that you can not make the game run on the Rift’s screen, again, please make sure, that all the following parameters are set OK:

    1. Make sure, that the rift is properly installed. I use the rift the way, that in my desktop/VGA settings:
    – DK2 and my monitor are side by side (monitor is the first and next to it on the right there is the DK2),
    – DK2 is in portrait mode and NOT landscape
    – In resolution options DK2 is set to 1920X1080 AND 75 Hz (this is essential!)
    – My DK2 is set to be secondary screen (apart from some rare cases as exceptions, I think DK2 doesn’t need to be set as primary screen!)

    2. WITHOUT launching VorpX you must launch the game first and make the following settings properly:
    – aspect ratio: auto
    – resolution 1920×1080
    – screen: FULLSCREEN (NOT borderless or windowed!)
    – refresh rate: 60 Hz (as there is not an option for 75 Hz, but if anybody knows, how to upscale this to 75 Hz, please, tell me)

Before exiting the game, SAVE the changes!

    3. Set the rift to extended mode and disable OR Service.

    4. BEFORE launching FC4 exe, launch Uplay and switch it to OFFLINE mode! Disabling the overlay can not hurt either.

    5. BEFORE launching FC4 exe, launch VorpX and enter general configuration. The most important thing there is to set “SHOW ON RIFT DK2” and NOT “use system settings”! This is highly important, otherwise you can run into the same problem, that the game won’t show up on your rift’s screen, only on your monitor!

I also use the following settings turned ON:
    – Disable Aero on game start
    – Restore desktop windows

I also had the problem, as some other commenters mentioned too, that in the game everything was “too close”, and it made me a headache quite soon. To avoid this you can create optimal view by harmonizing the following settings:
    – Increasing FOV in VorpX Game Settings Optimizer menu (for my taste, FOV 130 worked much better, and resulted a more comfotable gameplay, than FOV 120)
    – Altering vignette scale and image zoom settings ingame through VorpX control panel
    – Switching between lens A and lens B settings

I hope, that the guide above helped in solving FC4 – DK2 problems to all of you!

Keeping all these instructions I think there is no way to fail playing FC4 on DK2.

Please, write some feedback, how you succeeded.

    Greetings!

Hello, I’m begging anyone out there to please post there settings for games that work really good with the new vorpx? Please, Please, Please! I was going to purchase it for FPS games like BF4, Far cry 3 & 4. I also have a mag 2 gun controller that works great with all FPS shooters that can easily decouple with a button press your head and gun movement. Everyone that owns the DK2 should definitely get one of these fps gun controllers.

Hi, couple questions about Far Cry 4:

I followed all the instructions and set FC4 to an FOV of 120 and I still find everything to be very zoomed in. Is this just how it is? It has made me very nauseous.

Also, is there a way to decouple the head & camera motion from the gun’s motion? That way I can move my head around to look, but use the mouse or right analog stick to aim.

And lastly, I went back to play Far Cry 4 with Vorpx turned off and I noticed that now the main menu and all hud elements are all scaled down to about half the screen size. Is there a way to get them back to normal?

    thanks for any help,
    Jason
