This is a good tip. I’m still somewhat salty that Oculus introduced ASW without an official way for developers to disable it in their apps/games. It has its merits, but personally I really dislike the artifacts it introduces. vorpX is just better with its own rotation only frame interpolation instead of ASW. Comes without any artifacts and also works with uneven framerate ratios, so you can e.g. run games at 60 or 70fps instead of everything below 90 tanking to 45 like ASW does.

I considered several times to force disable it in the past, but since the registry hack the debug tool uses is a system wide setting, that’s a bit risky. E.g. if a PC crashes before vorpX can restore the original setting, ASW could get stuck being disabled without users being able to tell what happened. However, I should probably at least add an option to toggle ASW on/off with the same registry hack to the vorpX tray icon right click menu.

I was halfway enjoying my VR playthrough due to some serious hours in troubleshooting to try and get decent performance. Anyways decided to check back and saw this. Now my game runs much better. Like a charm. I had a feeling SteamVR was causing some issues just wasn’t sure how to get it to where it doesn’t want to launch with the game. Anyways I’m getting 60+ frames on average now on my 2080ti (pretty high settings). So grateful for that extra performance boost and even more grateful to have a hard-working dev to deliver us this experience. Thanks again to Ralph and everyone else helping to get everyone where they want to be, playing this game how it ought to be played. Cheers!

Try to get both Virtual Desktop and SteamVR out of the way. Two extra layers between vorpX and the headset always bear the risk of creating weird issues.

vorpX’s native Oculus runtime mode doesn’t work with DX12 for Steam games due to an incompatibility with the DX12 Steam overlay, but OpenXR, which has been added to vorpX recently, does.

    1. Close both Virtual Desktop and SteamVR.
    2. Make Oculus your system’s OpenXR runtime by double clicking the .reg file in the linked zip archive: OculusOpenXR.zip. Oculus doesn’t enable OpenXR per default yet, but ist’s already working quite well from my experience. Caveat: The .reg file assumes that the Oculus software is installed in its default folder.
    3. Select OpenXR as your headset type in the vorpX config app on the ‘General’ page.
    4. Use Link/Air Link. DO NOT start SteamVR, it’s not required with OpenXR.

    Couple things

1, why can I never get head tracking to work properly. No matter how far I look in either direction physically in game it only goes a little. And sometimes it even seems to go the other way. I have turned look acceleration up etc.

2, my main problem seems to be with the Steam Vr home. If I click on game title just through my quest 2 library it loads much better.

    Hey,

I’m using Nvidia RTX 2060. I tried the method in the VorpX instruction to create a 2560 x 1440p resolution (My monitor is a 25 inch 1080p) For some reason, the textures in the game will have a silouette (especially the guns) It also run unstable and will mess up my previous displayed resolution settings in game (i have to adjust it everytime i quit and play the game) I also notice it throws my game performance down, but this could be the fact my rtx 2060 is a lower end card in 2021. I’m still glad i can play this on 1080p with around 50-60 ish fps on Z3D.

I’ll try again with the resolution but I don’t know why it kinda messed up with the texture in the game and causes crashes sometimes. But at 1080p, my monitor can run on 144hz (eventhough i only get around 50-60fps) I really wish i can run on higher resolution, at least 1920 x 1440. When the resolution is set at 1440p (1920 and 2560) the game 3D looks like it’s flickering and gives me nausea.

I think when I’m inside the menu in game and I move the cursor out, it’ll be back out to Windows on my other monitor. (Not 100% positive, but i’ll test it out and let you know)
One in game issue, when I use the Scope Aim with the sniper rifle, the game will act very weird. It’ll kick me out of the aim sequence and then kinda mess up the aiming movement. Just wondering if other people are experiencing it? I tried using flat mode and it doesn’t act this way.

I dont have the game yet but that -may- all be caused by having two monitors running. I hope the scope thing isnt just inherent to the game tho, thatd be a bummer. Thanks for bringing it up to get feedback; but when you unplug your second monitor, can you post here whether the scoping problem went away?

Thanks for your time, hope you enjoy the game. I saw you having trouble with vorpx the other day – it really is an amazing tool, just a little complex at first but eventually youll understand what 95% of the options do and what you need to set up to make a game work for you.

But as someone mentioned, even if you gotta turn the graphics down, get to 2560x1440p. If youre on an AMD card you need to go into the AMD settings (right click desktop) and then click the ‘gear’ icon on the upper right. Once youve clicked that, click Display.

Next part, in the list of options for ‘display’ – do this in this exact order cause ive had it bug out when I didnt.

    Enable GPU Scaling.
After that, enable “Virtual super resolution”

Then turn you desktop to 2560x1440p just in case theres conflicts with the game, put it on borderless windowed, or just try them all and see what runs best. But playing 1080p in a headset vs. 2560×1440 is night and day, even if you need to tone down some graphics, its worth it

    good luck

I really appreciate the response and tip TheBalt.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me.

I used the sizes from your example and was super optimistic but still the same D3D error.

I would be interested to see if it works for anyone else.

damn, im sorry Clint.. hmm, ok, this is just the same thing but maybe try going even a little -crazier- with the numbers. I have been running Doom Eternal + Vorpx Desktop and getting memory errors even when I had 20 gigs set aside… I thought it was plenty and still crashed. Kicked it up to 30000 and now no crashes. It probably wont work, but, it might be worth giving it one last shot. and remember to reboot your computer before trying to launch your program again.

I will try to do some research on this error in particular – i dont think this is Vorpx screwing with you, just pushing the system hard and we need to find a way to circumvent that. I have dealt with similar problems before and somehow sorted them out, I will take a closer look for a bit and see if I find anything else.. but go ahead and try one more time going even crazier with the numbers and then reboot after you make sure they are set and dont revert to old numbers

Yes I just saw the posts about the cyberpunk profile. I’ve got it to hook a few times by messing with the hook method. When I do get it to launch its got really low FPS even on lowest settings. I’m sure it’s something silly I’m overlooking. I’m still relatively new to using VorpX so my apologies if I seem like a bit of a potato. Any help is greatly appreciated as I was really looking forward to trying this one with VorpX

I dont have the game yet so cant offer any insight specifically – but have you made sure Vysnc is turned off in both your graphics card; nvidia and AMD will often by ‘default’ have Vysnc or some propriety form of it on; and make sure Vsync is obviously off in the game.

What card are you using? Are you getting crashes because of a potential lack of RAM/Memory? Does it give any error box or just program freezes or crashes? Have you played any other relatively new ‘high’ level graphics games on Vorpx or you been primarily playing old games? If youre using Geometry 3d – thats a system hog. If the game has serviceable non Geo 3d options, id have to recommend them unless youve got a new card that came out in like the last 8 months or so, anything else is likely going to struggle pretty hard on this if its Geo3d.

Tried quite a few different ways to get it to hook with full game. Any insight would be appreciated. This would be incredible I’m sure if I could get it working. I couldn’t have imagined it would be this difficult. Ralph if you hear my wishes I beg of you to give this a looksies :D I get pulling the d3 d12 error telling me to switch my device to a steam device, even though I’m on occulus. Then on the off chance I can get it to hook into the game I’m getting awful performance on all different settings :(

Ok so at least it should be possible to hook, it won’t hook here. I get a ‘hooking’ message the first time I try but then it simply doesn’t hook. When I exit and retry I don’t even get the vorpx hooking message.
The no 3d is not an issue for me, if I can get it running in Cinema mode I would already be extremely happy.
BTW there is a 60fps patch released for GPL.

Basically what the title says, the box that says it’s attaching stays there forever. Running Titanfall 2 on desktop works perfectly fine by the way.

    Htc Vive (original)

launching the game with EA Desktop application

    Using the official profile

If it is of any help, I uninstalled OpenXR and reinstalled it since it was preventing me from attaching to any games after the new update.

    Hey Ralf,

Okay so you were right, managed to get the game to stay on screen with Windowed Mode + Borderless Gaming… but ran into a new problem that might be the crux of this being an issue at all for me, cause this wasnt a problem even a month ago.

My mouse ‘cursor’ stays on screen. I have tried to use the shortcut to eliminate the mouse cursor, but its always there, not the ‘games’ mouse cursor, but the windows typical one. When i “click” to try to tell it to “select this window”; it makes the game freeze up and/or crash entirely.

So not quite sure what to do about this issue, but did get the game ‘rendering’ in the headset, but I cant do anything in game because the mouse cursor is acting as a ‘buffer’ between me and interacting with the window. Tried the button shortcut to kill the mouse cursor with no luck.

Thanks for your time and sorry for all the questions! Take care!

Good call on the Batman Arkham series, those are some of my favorites and will definitely be checking those out

Despite i am not that much of a first-person-vr-immersion-enthusiast and more a bigass-theatre-wide-screen-addict, i am very much interested in how the ARKHAM SERIES could be played in vorpX full-vr.

@ToxicMike: You are so right. The vast majority of VR titles are poor in detail and boring. Only titles like skyrim that have been ported from flat to vr or flat games with VR mods available like Valheim, are great. I’ve been using vorpx since my DK2 (2015). Now with my Reverb G2 and the current Vorpx I’ve reached what I dreamed of.

LOL my oculus-rift-s wasn´t used for about a year, giving it one last shot with playing a game for the first time on a theatre-screen with bigscreen-beta (i never thought about it coz it didn´t made much sense to me, let alone that i had doubts about the experience being THAT great), before i was about to sell my vr-gear cheap, but from that moment on, i was never playing any game on my regular flat-monitor again and jacked myself into the vr-goggles with EVERY game i was playing EVERY TIME i played it. All of the sudden i was aware that i can´t ever enjoy any game without vr-goggles ever again LOL.

My best vr-experiences were SUPERHOT VR followed by HELLBLADE (interesting how absolutely great this 3rd-person game was in vr and that its vr-mode was actually coming more as a late add-on rather than an exclusive vr-game, wishing myself for even more 3rd-person games in vr!) and last but not least THE TALOS PRINCIPLE VR…and i actually loved DOOM VR, a title often downvoted negative by many users, to my surprise.

…and then there were, also to my surprise, many vr-titles preached by users in all positive ways but for me being the absolute “nightmare” in vr-games, horrifying in every negative way someone could imagine a vr-title to be. Now you might think i am talkin about vr-sickness, but that never was a big problem since i got adapted to it pretty fast, there were other major problems:

.) SERIOUS SAM VR: WTF?!?!? What do people love with this crap of a vr-game??? I love all the regular versions of SSAM but this?! Standing still while shooting into all directions, being so stressful and hectic that i actually lost every immersion from all the concentration it took for me to hit and dodge, almost getting sick from all the stress, so i tried on easier difficulty settings but then the game was too easy and boring, putting it away after 30 minutes and never loaded it up ever again.

.) Those “Bow”-Titles: What in gods name were they thinking???? The technique of shooting arrows with moving my hands in a similiar way was fun, but really….shooting more arrows at waves of enemies, than Robin Hood shot in all of his movies together, was more of a “stressful” experience rather than a joyful one, i also got that feeling (again) of losing every immersion coz the game itself took far too much of my concentration in order to hit all those enemies…..let alone that my shoulder still hurts by just thinking about those 30 minutes where i probably shot a million of virtual arrows.

.) Other more or less “mediocre” experiences/titles weren´t that great coz they were probably first generation vr-titles and only “great” on their release but i guess they´re not the titles these days to show off with, most of all coz some of those graphics are kinda like walking between “cardboard walls” rather than a “real” environment, but at least i was having the immersion of really walking inside another world…even if it was a “cardboard-world”.

…oh my..the size of this article again, sorry fellas i know i get carried away with writing way too much at times lol.

I can’t play flat anymore and with vorpx I don’t have to

LOL vorpX is the only reason for me to keep VR after all coz most of the vr-exclusives never really did it for me except one, two or three titles, now i am even scared that VR-Industry would probably even come to a halt like it happened to 3D-Blu-Rays (a thing i also never got hooked on) with some people still not getting it that 3D-Home-Entertainment (on regular Hardware) is dead…if there wouldn´t be the option to watch 3D-Movies in VR.

    Thanks Ralf!

No 3Dvision. I’m on an AMD card (until the 3080/ti becomes available

Just an FYI after a LOT of toying around…

I could consistently get the game to boot and let me switch 3D modes so long as I forced it to boot the 32 bit version in Origin.
The only downside here is that the game won’t let you change any graphics options in 32 bit mode (which is strange).
So, I’d have to get my settings where I wanted them in 64 bit without Vorpx, and then go back to 32 bit with Vorpx.
Another win was, I didn’t even realize BF4 worked in Z3D, because I always had SMAA turned on.
Suddenly I have Z3D with it off now. It’s cleaner looking with 4xSMAA obviously, but with G3D giving me texture artifacts no matter what I do, I’ll take some aliased Z3D for now!
