I’ve got a RTX 2080, but I’m definitely not getting the performance some of you here are getting.
I applied all the common .ini fixes and used the Last Light profile for Exodus.
Even on low settings it still doesn’t run that good. Only cinema mode is bearable.

    Anything I might have missed?

I’ve been stereoscopic gaming for nearly a decade now, mostly on a 720p DLP in frame-packing mode (TriDef) but more recently moved to a 1080p display (so using top/bottom, mostly through TriDef as well). Since I already played in 3D I didn’t feel the need to hop into VR right away. Now that a wide-fov HDM is available at a reasonable price (Pimax 5k) I plan to hop on the VR bandwagon, and will definitely be using vorpX since the vast majority of my games are not VR titles.

My primary tools are TriDef (now defunct) and SuperDepth 3D for games which either don’t work in TriDef (few) or for which performance through TriDef just isn’t satisfactory, or for a handful of other reasons. (Unfortunately ReShade disables access to the depth-buffer during online play, so that makes SuperDepth 3D unusable in games like Fallout 76. We need to convince Crossire to allow this to work.) As such, I’m relatively familiar with tweaking 3D profile settings for games etc.

Anyone here make a similar transition and have advice to give as to what problems to watch out for? I’m just looking for some general advice / tips if anyone wants to share.

I mostly play character-and/or-world-driven RPGs (Dragon Age Origins = my favorite game of all time) and Racing SIMs with a dedicated racing seat and FFB equipment (T500) (Assetto Corsa = my current go-to). In fact, I’ll almost certainly want to go back and play all of my long-time favorites again as soon as I get the rig working properly: Dragon Age series, Mass Effect series, Fallout 3 and newer, etc. As such I imagine that I’ll largely be using an HMD with traditional controls (I have a Nostromo, so I can effectively keyboard & mouse without having to use the regular keyboard itself). How hard has it been adjusting to use of traditional controls when you can’t see them? Or does vorpX do such a good job of mapping VR controllers that even for games like Dragon Age Origins I should just bite-the-bullet and adapt?

And how are the vorpX profiles? If I see that a game is supported does this mean the profiles are excellent, or are there issues like the frequent lighting/shadow depth problems TriDef had, that have to be discovered and worked-around?

    Hi,
My rift works great until I install Vorpx. Once Vorpx is installed every time I put on the rift I get the above message, even if Vorpx is not actually running.
The only way to stop this message appearing is to uninstall the Oculus and Vorpx software and delete all the Oculus folders, restart the PC and reinstall the Oculus software from scratch.
Any idea how I can fix this error message and use Vorpx with my rift?
    Thanks,
    David

Ok, now I understand perfectly and I agree as a general rule, however, I have been testing both ways.

On the one hand, the automated default profile, which is recommended for the majority of users, which you also recommend.

On the other hand, a personal and manual test with the help of a trainer aspect ratio + FOV trainer, (ticked Do not optimized game setting ONLY in this case)
with this mentioned method there are no upper or lower visible bars at all, the headset shows the image completely filled. Tested with Oculus Rift CV1.

There are actually 2 vertical bars on the sides to get this, but these are not visible at all using the headset, except when we activate edge peek mode momentarily with the mouse central button.

The result was quite good, and also led to a game start menu a little further away, the less good part … is that I do not have perfectly calculated the FOV with this new manual test, and there is a small distortion in the movement with the head, but it is hardly noticeable with the movement of the pointer.
This happens even if we move zoom to its maximum value in vorpx internal menu.

The reason for creating this thread, was because I would like you to take a small look at this method or test with these external tools, and a few minutes of time.
You understand more accurately than I do, how to do a manual calculation for FOV in a closer aspect ratio.
These tools usually use LUA programming language, and open source code.

In the case of achieving this, evaluate if it is possible and feasible, the integration of the tool, or similar method, in order to perfect the current profile by default.

I do not usually make requests of this type for any game in the market, but considering that it is a “quite important” game.

There is an almost infinite amount of possible ways for game developers to program their rendering pipelines, hence vorpX has to treat every game engine different, often even multiple games that use different iterations of an engine. That’s what vorpX’s 3D profiles do.

If you know what engine your game is based, try an official vorpX profile for a game based on the same engine to create your custom profile. Chances aren’t too bad to get basic Geometry 3D that way, but there never is a guarantee.

Whenever you create a custom profile based on a G3D profile the G3D option is visible in the menu. Doesn’t necessarily mean that the user profile actually works correctly though. The option being visible just means that vorpX uses the G3D parameters defined in the profile. Whether these parameters are right for the game you try with the profile is a different question.

I can’t seem to get VorpX to work lately. I’ve done everything in the General Troubleshooting steps including disabling all overlays, antivirus, creating VorpX desktop shortcuts, etc.

When I launch a game, the VorpX overlay does not appear even though it is in “Watching” mode.

When I launch the VorpX-created game shortcuts, nothing happens. The game won’t start.

Any ideas what might be causing the overlay to not work? I’m using the latest 1.9.1.0 version of VorpX.

Nice! Glad to see you’ve got a Pimax running. My 8k finally arrived this weekend so I’ve got a lot of vorpX games testing in the days ahead. Thanks for the tips.

First impression is still not quite the resolution bump I was hoping for (perhaps a slight downgrade coming from a P4k), but the FOV is definitely larger. Yet to see how well first person games will be able to handle this increase, but early tests with Assassins Creed Odyssey (which has virtually limitless fov via ini tweak) has shown me that it can work pretty well.

    A few quick observations:
    – immersive screen could use increased zoom in
    – edge peek could use increased zoom out
    – crystal image off vs on might look better
    – fluid sync seems to halve the framerate to 20 (from 40 which seems is already halved from 80 by Pitool?)
    – getting severe drops from 40 down to 12 for about 20 seconds then it recovers. Happens randomly every 10 mins or so. Pitool running diagnostics? or gfx card dump?

For playing Odyssey, I really like the adjustable cinema screen which allows me to wrap the image around almost the entire fov of the Pimax. I might even prefer the way it looks compared to fullVR. The only problem being no edgepeek feature for dialogue scenes. I think it would be neat if either edgepeek could be added to cinema mode, or immersive screen mode given the increased zoom and curvature controls to match.

In general, vorpX seems to be working fine. No problems with hooking so far, and performance seems to be on par. Glad to see the Pimax may be getting some official support.

Time to test more games :)

vorpX now officially supports Pimax 5K/8K headsets (vorpX 19.1.1 and above). For the best experience please check these recommendations.

    Brainwarp Settings

    • Compatible with parallel projections: has to be ON.
    • Compatible With Vive Only Game: has to be OFF.
    • Turn on smart smoothing: should be OFF to avoid judder
    • Refresh Rate: 72Hz: not necessary, but reduces CPU/GPU usage.
    • Field of View: Small: better performance, still provides very decent ~130° horizontal FOV, also helps with games that have a hardcoded FOV limit

    Render Quality Settings

    • PiTool: Rendering Quality: 1.0 (default)
    • SteamVR: Video: Manual Override: 50%

These settings produce a large enough headset render target to play games at common vorpX resolutions.

The above was tested with a 5K+, for Pimax 8K SteamVR quality at 50% might already be overkill. Try 30-40% instead.

    Game Resolutions

In contrast to other headsets 4:3 resolutions usually aren’t best for Pimax 5K/8K. Unless 4:3 is required for a game to work correctly (mostly Half-Life2, Portal 2 and other Source engine games), 16:10 seems to be a perfect fit for the FOV setting recommended above.

Try 1680×1050, 1920×1200 or 2304×1440. Depending on the game and your GPU these should usually provide a decent quality/performance ratio. You can also use similar 16:9 resolutions.

    Conclusion

With these settings older games can be run on your Pimax even on a midrange GPU like a GTX 1070/2060 in Geometry 3D at 1200p resolutions. For more demanding games and/or higher game resolutions a faster GPU is highly recommended.

Potential performance issues like judder can be addressed by reducing a game’s resolution and/or graphics details or by switching to Z3D in vorpX, which is a lot faster than G3D.

Hi just want to share things.
I am using an xbox elite controller ( with paddles). I alway had problems getting the controller fit to Skyrim,fallout4, witcher, gta5 just to name a few.Alway missing funktions,, and keyboard funktion mostly not available. I had xpadder installed but the paddle cant be remapped. So yester day i found the rewasd mapper.
It tooks a few hours,, but now all keyboard funktions, macros and different profiles are now programmed. Its almost unbelievable now i can use my elite contoller that can handle four single controller setups for each game and best the profiles can be switch with one click at a dedicate combo programed .I v can have mouse, keyboard and xbox controller activated simultaniously. I tested today with vorpy and so far no problems. I even can use one controller mapping for all my games…..

I’ve tried everything I can think of but every time I try to start VorpX it gives me an error message saying

“Sorry, vorpX encountered a critical error and cannot do its magic :\
Try restarting the application. If the problem persists, reinstalling vorpX might help.”

I’ve tried reinstalling as admin, running as admin, rebooting, completely uninstalling any and all antivirus, and looking through 60 pages here in the forums along with many google searches. I will say when I first bought this on my last computer it worked fine. But now even after I got a new download link and registered again and stuff it just doesn’t want to work.
Please, I’ve been at this forever now and I’m out of ideas. VorpX support stopped responding 2 weeks ago after just 1 message saying to reinstall.

Use the built in FPS counter (ALT+F). vorpX has two render-pipelines running in parallel: the game itself and a second one which renders the final image to the headset, both can have different frame rates. The built in FPS counter displays both.

In cinema/immersive mode you can get away with rather low game FPS. Even 25-30fps may work fine in that case if the game isn’t a super fast shooter.

Thanks Ralf. The game was already at DX11, so that didn’t seem to fix the problem. Does vorpx have some type of log I can check or turn on?

do you have legit copy ?

you can try right click vorpx icon (bottom right) and create a game shortcut, that can fix the hooking issue.

for me vorpx has to start hooking before the game launches else it doesnt hook.

Yes, I bought my copy through steam. I am aware of how the hooking is supposed to work. As I stated in my original post, I confirmed vorpx was working properly with other games. This is the reason I am asking if the program has associated logs with it. If logging is possible, then I can probably get a good idea on specifically why the game isn’t hooking.

I didn’t know about the create shortcut option before. But, after trying it, that doesn’t work either. The game simply doesn’t even attempt to load according to the task manager.

    Thanks!

That was just the push in the right direction I needed. After heading down a somewhat long and twisty rabbit hole, it turned out that together, OpenTrack and FreePIE were the programs I needed. Didn’t even have to disable vorpX’s head tracking, as the apps added to the inputs rather then replace them.

I’ve still got fine-tuning to do, but I’m a very happy vorpX Skyrim camper.

    Hello Ralf,

I had I think version 18.2.3 or so and today it updated by itself when starting. It did the installation of 2017 vcRedistributables, then of itself.
But even after rebooting, it silently exits when launched, whether from Config VorpX or Start VorpX. The most I can get is an icon in the taskbar that disappears when the windows cursor approaches it.

Right after update and before reboot, it had the same behavior but also made windows emit the sound of a device that gets disconnected (like when you unplug an usb key) each time I stried to start it.

Previous versions had absolutely no problems running on my Win7 64 with 16GB ram + Oculus rift.

I have already uninstalled keeping the license data and re-installed from web-setup, but no change.

Is there a log somewhere I could post here to help you diagnose the cause ?

Judging by a few videos of playing Exodus with a 1060 on youtube, with modest settings at 1080p you should be able to get above the needed 45 fps for a comfortable experience through most of the game. Go have a look on youtube to decide for yourself though.

Using Z-normal (performance) 3D you’ll hardly notice a fps hit while running vorpX. If you can tolerate 30 fps, you might even be able to push 1440p to look more clear.

There isn’t an official profile for Exodus yet (no DirectVR), so you’ll need to import one and set FOV manually as described in the posts above.

If you decide to try it out and need more help, let us know. I’m having a lot of fun in it so far.
