Official answer first, others are welcome to chime in of course,

The amount of ‘tinkering’ required varies from game to game. By now there is a good amount of games that work without any tinkering at all besides choosing a resolution / graphics details setting that fits your PCs performance and then pressing a button in the vorpX ingame menu once you entered the game. That’s called ‘Direct VR’ and is currently true for about 30 games, Fallout 3 / New Vegas included.

For other games there are two things that have to be adjusted for playing games in full VR mode with vorpX: camera field of view and head tracking sensitivity. There are several ways to achieve this or at least circumvent it with varying degrees of perfection if for example adjusting the field of view is not possible at all.

Additionally to full VR mode there also always is the option of playing games in cinema mode, which doesn’t require any setup at all, and in a few weeks something new called “Immersive Screen Mode”, which lies between full VR and cinema mode immersion-wise. That also won’t require any tinkering for any game.

On a personal note I’d like to add that I sometimes can’t help but think that some people simply tweak too much with too little actual knowledge just because they read somewhere that would be necessary – ultimately causing more harm than good in the process. Even with non-Direct VR games it’s not really hard to get going if you invest a little bit of time and actually read the guides in the vorpX help, which can and will save you a lot of mindless tweaking.

So several VR communities around the net have very negative opinions on VorpX. Which is a shame, because I quite like the idea of forcing VR onto some of my favorite games, even if it’s janky. After all, one of the first things I did when I got my Vive was play through the entirety of Half Life 2 using it’s original VR code. What a vomit coaster that ride was.

Anyway, I saw a post the other day of someone giving their playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas with VorpX a glowing review. They implied that, with the right set up, Fallout New Vegas felt almost as natural as Alien: Isolation with VR support.

Now, I’ve done a bit of research on VorpX. I have a rough idea of how much tinkering it requires and I have a rough idea and what results I’ll be getting out of it. But I need some first hand anecdotes from people who – presumably – are happy with the software and use it regularly. It’s hard to get any positive opinions elsewhere.

I expect a large amount of the negative opinions come from people expecting an easier or smoother process than VorpX provides, and I’m fine with that. I also have a pretty strong VR stomach, and I’m more than willing to sink some time into tinkering around to get the settings right. But I still have a fair few concerns. Like, how much in-and-out of the headset tinkering do you usually have to do on a playthrough? Am I going to find myself having to bind a lot of extra functions onto a lot of keyboard keys? Have many of you played entire playthroughs of games with VorpX, and if so, what ones? I’m curious to know what the more popular, well supported games are among the community.

Someone sell me on VorpX, so I can live the dream of playing Fallout: New Vegas in VR.

If I’ve posted this in the wrong section, please forgive me, and please move it to the correct forum.

Hello. I am a VR newbie and I have just picked up an Oculus Rift Bundle and have been setting it up this evening. I had been holding off on getting a VR headset as I was waiting for some lengthy triple-A games to arrive in VR. With the release of Skyrim VR for the PSVR I was thinking, “Okay, have we arrived?” So I picked up a PSVR and a copy of Skyrim VR. I played it for a bit, thought it was pretty good, or actually very good, but I was missing my mods for Skyrim.

So, I went on youtube to see if Skyrim VR would be coming to the Vive/Rift anytime soon, and if it would support mods. And what did I see but YouTube videos of people playing Skyrim through VorpX, WITH MODS, RIGHT NOW! And they were saying it was amazing and was working really well. That lit a fire under me and I purchased an Oculus Rift Bundle and a copy of VorpX.

My PC has the following specs:
    Windows 10 Pro
    Intel i7-6900k @ 3.20 GHz
    32 GB of RAM
Asus Rampage V Edition 10 motherboard
    Nvidia Titan Xp 12 Gig

I got the Rift up and running fine, and was blown away by the Touch Tutorial with the little robot. That was really, really, really amazing to me. Having played both Resident Evil 7 and Skyrim VR on the PSVR, I thought they just could not compete with what I just saw on the Rift with that Touch Tutorial.

So, I excitedly installed the VorpX software. I already had Skyrim SE installed as I think it looks better than original Skyrim, and I run a lot of mods… the Special Edition I find to be more stable with mods.

I started up my Oculus software, then I started up VorpX using the “Start vorpX” icon on my desktop (three vorpX icons were added upon install: Start vorpX, vorpX Desktop Viewer, and Configure vorpX). Once vorpX was started, I right-clicked the vorpX icon down in my system tray and went to Configure… I then went to Game Settings Optimizer in the left side panel and then went down to Skyrim SE, selected it and chose Optimize Settings and then I clicked Apply & Close.

I then launched the game (unsure of what all settings I should make from the Skyrim options panel and to the Skyrim ini files) at a resolution of 1920×1080. I DID turn off V-Sync both through the Skyrim ini’s and made sure it was off in my Nvidia control panel settings for the Skyrim executable.

Upon game start, I had trouble seeing the main screen options as they were far, far down in the bottom right corner of my view, and I just could not see them no matter how I turned my head. So I took the headset off and on my TV screen (this is my living room computer and is normally hooked up to a 4k television set through a 4k audio/video receiver) I was just able to make out the options, so I loaded a save game. Once the save was loaded, my view-point was staring straight up into the sky… So I pressed the Delete key and brought up the vorpX in-game menu, then navigated over to the Direct VR Scan and clicked it (making sure to not move any of my controls). That finished. Things were not looking too good, so I went into the vorpX menu again and changed the 3D Reconstruction from Z Adaptive to Z Normal and that looked at least a little better.

BUT, when I turned my head, the screen/head-tracking would turn in the OPPOSITE direction. So, I didn’t know what to do to correct that, so I just shut everything down and did a restart on everything… This time the screen/head-tracking was turning to match which way I was looking, BUT, the depth just didn’t feel anywhere close to as good as it did in the Rift’s Touch Tutorial. Also everything beyond like 10 feet in the game world was pretty blurry, and when I got close to characters they all had a weird ghosting or doubling of their image.

So, I’m sure it comes down to me not running things properly and having all things set up properly. What is the proper way to run Skyrim SE? What ini settings should I make? V-sync on or off? Shadows on trees, the land… on or off? Ambient Occlusion, yes or no? Ansiotropic Filtering? Antialiasing? What about settings for the Nvidia control panel? Maximum pre-rendered frames? Texture filtering? Triple buffering? Vertical sync?

What should I be changing on the vorpX in-game menu for Skyrim? Also, in the main vorpX config I see Local and Cloud Profiles… Should I be using them with Skyrim? In the Cloud Profiles tab, I see that you can sign in but when I tried with my credentials that I use for these forums the program keeps telling me log-in failed.

I’m at a loss and I’m not sure what to do or where to start. I’m fairly technical but totally new to VR, the Occulus and to vorpX. Any help that anyone can provide, well, I’d certainly appreciate it. :)

Also, the PSVR has a quick way to re-center or re-set your VR view if it gets off-kilter, do we have anything similar with vorpX or the Rift?

So I posted my New Vegas experience on Reddit:

Just Finished New Vegas in VR
    byu/vive420 inVive

I finished New Vegas exclusively in VR after 153 hours. It was a fantastic experience. It’s getting a lot of upvotes and aside from a few imbecile trolls that are too thick to figure out vorpx, it seems the majority of people are reacting positively to VorpX which I hope will lead to more sales for Ralf.

One criticism I heard about VorpX was on Skyrim. Here’s what the guy said:

    “THIS.
every after working perfectly, there are tons of problems and bugs that make enjoying games IMPOSSIBLE.
The only value i’ve been able to get from this software is standing with my head still in my house in skyrim, looking at that in 3D.
But whenever i moved my head around, even with direct3D, there were visual aberrations and strange things happening that made it impossible to enjoy it (like watching up or down made things morph in shape by getting bigger or smaller or distorting in weird ways).
Gameplay itself was impossible due to the gargantuan arms bug, unsolvable via mods unless you get rid of the direct3D and thus rendering the game unplayable in different ways even worse than the gargantuan arms.”

So this guy claims that after a DirectVR scan, aside from the giant hands (common problem) apparently movement would give a lot of weird visual distortions. Did anyone else experience that with Skyrim in the recent versions of VorpX?

I personally never used VorpX on Skyrim and instead plan to wait for a native VR port. But I may use VorpX with skyrim in the future to play a modded version of Skyrim after I beat the game vanilla using motion controls in the vr version will probably won’t support mods (I still haven’t played eithe skyrim or fallout 4 so my first experience will be in native vr).

For New Vegas my VorpX run was basically amazing with no distortions. The 3D was really great. The next game I plan to play with VorpX is oblivion which I expect will run pretty well since it’s old. I want to focus on older Bethesda games like New Vegas and Oblivion because it’s unlikely that they will ever get native vr ports.

This cant be real right? There is NO way a person who has no idea what something is would go out and buy it right? Your saying you went out and spent money on a program that you have literally NO idea what it does or is even supposed to be used for? Do you expect people to actually believe you? Maybe get a job at Newsweek o Facebook because your IQ is clearly single digits. Seriously are you a brain dead 12 year old? Like seriously, what the hell? Like smash my face with the keyboard, what THE HELL is wrong with these dip shits?

I am sorry to say that, but tone of your ‘answer’, could work for some people as a lead to state your IQ. Just quick thought on it.

To OP: Don’t get offended by first post.

D3D11 only. Gets activated automatically to avoid any potential confusion. IIRC it’s not even possible to select D3D9 anymore in the Blizzard launcher.

    Freelivorno:

I had problems getting FO3 working even after removing d3dx9.dll from the game directory. So if you still can’t get it going after doing so, then try un-installing FO3 from your computer and then re-installing it. That did it for me.

You then just need to apply Ralf’s fix for FO3 in the game optimization for FO3.

    Cheers!!

I just downloaded vorpx installed it and configured it with the configurator.
When trying to start vorpxcontrol via the desktop shortcut it simply “dies” and doesn’t start.
Looking inside my application event log I find an (application) error 1000 in conjunction with the vorpxcontrol.exe and the shell32.dll.
Unfortunately error code 1000 is a generic code that’s not very specific.
Digging around in the net and the forum doesn’t provide me any usefull hint, so I’m starting this thread here.

    OS: Windows 10
    3D device: Oculus Rift
I’m using BitDefender as an AV (“snakeoil” ;-), don’t start that discussion with me), no errors inside and I even moved the vorpx programs inside the trusted apps.

Any advice, hints or even a solution?

Just be aware, I’m not having any issue with a game. I’m stranded before I can even get a shot at a try. :-(

    Best regards
    Tim

I’ve noticed G3D does do some interesting things like you say, plus even though it does look superior I find it hard to get use to due what you are describing. This is one of the main reasons why I still prefer to use Z3D, besides for the performance gain.

I’m definitely looking forward to Ralf’s new update. I’ve put over 150 hrs into Skyrim VR alone besides the 1000’s of hrs spent in 2D before VR. If it’s that much better I just may have to start a new run again…LOL!!! Can’t get enough of running around the forests and mountains…still finding things I haven’t seen before…even after all that.

I had to come give further props to Ralph and vorpX. I’ve used it for a long time, ever since I got my DK2 when those first shipped. It’s always worked, and been a great tool to enjoy non VR games in VR. I got a Vive now and am going over all my favorites to see how they play now. I tried the direct VR in a few games and it worked great as an easy solution to just tweaking settings like the old days. But when I ran it in Fallout 3 I about fainted.

I have to say vorpX has really, really knocked my socks off yet again. After running the direct scan in Fallout 3, it just feels like your actually transported into the wasteland. The FOV gets set, the position locates you and bam your there… Its damn near perfect 1 to 1. Crystal clear image, the best image quality in an injected game I have ever seen. The vanilla textures even look good in VR! They’re muddy up close but the clarity of the image and the fact that parallax textures now work in 3D and you got a feast for the eyes.

The room scale works so good I’m actually stunned. You can use cover, peek around corners, walk around and browse and loot. Its unreal how good they got it working for this game. This feels as close to a native game as your going to get. Sure there are some issues with UI and CTDs but that’s more a Fallout issue then vorpx. Really need to patch the memory and get some other UI mods to see if I cant solve these few issues..

I was so floored by how amazing it worked that I ended up playing until 5am two nights in a row. I haven’t even tested out mods because I cant resist popping back in to Fallout 3 VR. Its just so damn good, its freaky…. Really guys, if your half a Fallout fan you must try It in Direct VR. Even if you think you’ve played it with older vorpx versions, try it now, you wont be disappointed.

    Dellrifter:
Yeah I noticed that too, and disabled the uplay overlay as part of my winning combo. I’ll test it a bit more today to see if I can get it working reliably every time.
When Uplay does the complaining, I hit ok, and that is when I un-pause the vorpX watcher. Worked twice so far. (Haven’t tried it a 3rd time yet).
The ACO.ini hint helped too thanks! Much better with large FOV, and you can zoom the vorpX screen right in close to give that “Full VR” feel.

    Neida:
G3D is nice to have for most games, but in large open world games like this, I find that you don’t really miss it that much. You get a really good sense of 3D because of how large the world is. Some games, I can’t even tell (like GTA5). Plus, with the added performance boost of Z3D, you can crank all the game graphics up to Max. Even with a 1080ti, I don’t think you could do that on G3D.

The first time I loaded up Lotro it hooked to my oculus. I couldn’t get it to go into 3d so I closed it out and tried to make a profile using skyrim and hooking it to one the 4 executables for lotro but none of them seem to work. In the rift I just get the message “Sorry Lotro is taking a long time to load etc.” Even after deleting the profile Lotro still doesn’t hook.

Anyone know which executable is the right one to hook? TurbineInvoker seems to give the right icon for Rift but none of the 4 seem to hook right now.

Also anyone found a good profile copy or mind putting their Lotro profile on the cloud?

(Haven’t tried Oculus beta’s, setting that up now)

Thanks for the reply Ralf. I’ve been having many problems with my Rift lately since the current Oculus 1.19 build. This a frustrating process…since it worked perfectly up till 1.19.

I just reverted back to the older Windows 10 Pro install and am getting the same issue. I thought it was vorpx but its happening even with the Oculus software. So strange that only today the FOV problem just started…when it wasn’t there yesterday. Nothing has been added or changed on my computer…that I’m aware of.

I’ve updated my USB drivers and have the same problem…actually kind of worse. I downgraded the USB drivers to the ones provided by my MB distributor and still the same.

Anyway, I think Vorpx is ruled out as being the problem. Sorry about that…I’ve only been playing Skyrim in Vorpx lately so it was the first thing I thought as being the problem.

    Cheers!!!

Sorry but my initial post mentions i have already disabled it without any affect:

    “””
Now i have the CV1 and i cannot get any game to work at higher then 45 fps, even after turning off all the options VorpX has, so turned off head tracking, 3D (depth buffer etc to off), FluidSync everything off so basicly its like running the game normally performance whise (or so i thought). Even when turning down the resolution to 640×480 it does not run more than 45 fps and can even dip during gameplay.
    “””

And like i said the game can run 200 fps on max settings 1080p so on 640×480 low it should be able to run 90 fps easy. Some form of bug in VorpX seems to be causing a really heavy performance hit. Please read my post again i have tried everything i can think of to no avail :(

Oh i can run robo recall at 90 fps aswell btw. So i don’t get why i cannot seem to run even the main menu of FEAR or half life 2 with more than 45 fps ? Yes even in the main menu is locked to 45 fps, even when disabling the oculus AWS (limiting mode) the performance display is showing i have -60% negative performance (meaning the game thinks i need 60% more power even on lowest possible settings, this makes no sense)
