This seems to be a common problem with 3D in some games that render shadows a certain way, as it also occurs with Nvidia 3D Vision. It is annoying and apparently avoidable.

This guy knows how to fix the problem, since his fixes for 3D Vision preserve shadows but correct their placement, including for Alien Isolation

Water reflections are I think still incorrect.

In any case, maybe someone from Vorpx can collaborate with Helix to find solutions to these problems for Rift

So I found some old threads related to X3, but it seems no one was able to properly use VorpX with X3. Why is the game listed in the supported games list, when it isn’t?

I’m trying this with the Steam’s X3TC veresion, and here’s the progress that I have made so far:
    1) Edit the res.dat file, and add a line for the 9:10 resolution:
    1080;1200;
    2) With VorpX closed, launch the game and select that resolution and windowed mode in the launcher. The game should be running fine, except for the weird aspect ration resolution.
    3) Set on the game properties on steam the following launch options:
    -noabout
This will effectively skip the launcher and avoid the launch loop that happens when VorpX tries to inject itself too early.

If you open VorpX now and launch the game, it will “try” to initialize, but for me it doesn’t work. X3TC.exe throws a dialog with title “Steam Error” and content “Application load error P:0000065432”. If you inspect the threads on the exe, there are two that apparently execute for a while before dying:

    f4805a42-0.tmp!CreateDXGIFactory2+0x2dd50
    f4805a42-0.tmp!Direct3DCreate9+0x1a660

I assume that the DX/DXGI initialization failed due to the hook that VorpX is placing in DX.

The EgoSoft developers for some reason included the d3dx9_37.dll file in their folder, even though they are including the DX runtime that includes _37 (Mar 2008). The digital signature matches Microsoft, so it was not modified in any way, just distributed incorrectly in my opinion. I tried also renaming that file out of the way so it would the system’s DX dll but the same error happened.

Ralf, since you mentioned that VorpX used to work with the demo, are we missing something? Has one of their updates broke the compatibility? Which comes back to my original question, is this game really supported?

Just purchased vorpx a couple of days ago, only tried battlefield 4 atm, the image quality is horrible to be honest, i had 1920*1080 resolution ingame, that screen is then projected on a small screen inside the vive, so the resolution is already scaled down, then you zoom in for the “vr” effect and you end having pixels large like a mountain.
Not to mention that the 3d is faked with z-buffer, with very low to none effect and artifacts.

What am i missing? is it possible to set up a resolution that is going to use all the VIVE displays instead that just a portion of it ?

Do i have to set 1080*1200 ingame ?

Also is it possible to have information about the geometry 3d support for games? maybe on the supported game list you should write wich ones are available in true 3d, the fake z-buffer 3d is something i want to avoid at all costs.

Lastly, would it be possible to use the tridef driver togheter with vorpx ? they have a very good list of supported games in real 3d, would be great.

I’ll test more games in the meantime i really hope i’m missing something else vorpx is a no go for me.

Sometimes when games don’t start for me I do this simple trick:
    1) Re-start computer
    2) Start game and exit at first chance
    3) Start VorpX then the game again

If I do it like that I avoid the dreaded ‘Game.exe’ not found message.

While vorpX is active it tries to hook into every game you start. That includes VR games. To avoid this either exit vorpX before starting a native VR game or pause the injection watcher (tray icon right click menu).

If vorpX isn’t running, it doesn’t do anything. It’s just a normal program that only is active while it is running.

Okay, no problem. It’s a fairly small thing to have to deal with until the next update or two. Thanks for the quick response! Now that I’ve got this stuff functioning I am just super happy. Vorpx is rad! I don’t get VR sickness so it bums me out that developers are avoiding porting classic games to VR because of how common sickness is. This is an awesome workaround. Heck even playing games in the theater mode with 3D enabled is super cool.

Thank you sir – the controller does not hook into the game, it is seen as either a mouse and keyboard or an Xinput device by the PC. – So that leads me to believe its how I’m trying to get everything opened and running.

Everything used to work flawless, with the .8 runtime, and after the oculus updated and added their frontend, I’ve been unable to play. – again, because I’m sure “im just doing it wrong” haha.

So if I’m understanding correctly, I should follow these steps to get my games to open properly:

(make sure im not running software such as MSI afterburner, and that I am NOT using an SLI config. Also be sure that I am using a single monitor with my PC to avoid any other issues with hooking)

    Start VorpX

Oculus Home will Open -> Sign into Oculus Home

DV2 will display the white-tiled-floor environment asking to accept ToS (focus on button for 2 seconds) and will now be in the oculus “lounge” type environment.

Opening my game should now allow VorpX to hook and my DK2 will go from displaying the lounge to playing the game.

    – Are the above steps correct?

    – I’m also willing to make a tutorial video for your customers to follow :)

    Thanks for your time

Zooming out was a big improvement for me visually but I seem to be among the lucky ones immune to motion sickness.I set mine zoomed back until the bottom of the screen just barely avoids seperating into a ‘movie screen. Somewhere in the 60 range.

Also, I back the 3D enhancement functions all the way off. You still get a very 3D view without shrinking.making characters look small. I’m sure there are more but I’m still just learning myself.

Please make sure to run games windowed to avoid any possible conflictwith Oculus Home. For rFactorr that is definitely a requirement. Also make sure to apply the Game Optimizer settings in the vorpX config app if available for a game.

In case of injection problems with multiple games please also check for possible conflicts with other programs hooking into games. E.g. virus scanners, CPU/GPU utilities, video streaming programs, messengers and generally everything that can show notifications in games.

Best way of trouble shooting something like this is closing/uninstalling every background program that would not be there after a fresh, Microsoft only Windows install.

I’m having to play set to z-normal or with the 3D turned way down to avoid the lighting issue as well. Everything is working fine except for those f#@&ing shadows. Excuse my language but I’ve now spent my whole Saturday tweaking this thing. I FINALLY have everything set the way I want it and there’s no fix for the shadows? I’m appreciative believe it or not. I would pay $40 for just Alien Iso in VR so ts not about the $$. This would’ve been a perfect launch title but instead we got Lucky’s Tale. I just want it fixed please help. Games aren’t supposed to show on anything on a monitor, so that’s actually a good sign as it means vorpX was able to hook into them. They should however show in the headset.

Sometimes games can loose focus due to Oculus Home. That would result pretty much in what you describe. Black screen + audio and “Please wait” in the headset.

This should be esily solvabele by using ALT TAB to bring the game back into focus. Also running games windowed can help to avoid this in the first place.

I just want to clarify something on checkout, under system requirements:

“Oculus Rift DK2 or Oculus Rift (vorpX will not work without this)”

This is now null and void for us Vivers, right? :) I’ve heard talk about needing a Rift plugged in for updates or similar, and I’m not sure how the process works for your software and just wanted to be clear. I’ve been maniacally checking back for Vive updates on your page almost as much as I’ve been hitting refresh on my pending order screen! :D All I want is Skyrim/ESO in VR so I never need to leave my house again.

    Thanks!

I bought the VorpX software before the Vive support was even listed, assuming VR was VR, little did i know… but glad to see official support coming, I have only one complaint with the vive, the games are all EXPENSIVE demos.

I have bought and played a ton of them, and I have to say, if anything kills VR its the lackluster sub-par “pre-alpha” demos for sale at retail prices.

Ralf might be the savior for VR, at least for me… I cannot WAIT to play some actual AAA titles in VR.

Speaking of which, do you have an ETA for when you might first introduce Vive support?

List of games in my personal order of worth the money:

*.) Minecraft (minecrift-Vive) EPIC levels of fun! but no 1.9 support….
1.) Final Approach – Super Fun and interesting use of VR(full game)
2.) Budget cuts (demo) – Wicked fun, but a demo
3.) Space pirate trainer – Wicked fun (sold as full game, but its Pre-alpha)
4.) Vanishing Realms – Really Fun (Chapter 1 of X)
5.) Job Simulator – Really Fun first time through (kind of 4 demos)
6.) The Lab – fun (Demo Pack)
7.) Windlands – Oddly fun (only a short way into it)
    8.) TheBlu – not really worth the $10 but i kept it – (3 Short Demo’s)
9.) Fantastic Contraption – mediocre (came with my HMD)
10.) Cloudlands VR Golf (refunded) Terrible music, hard to see where you need to teleport to, and the courses are odd
11.) Call of the star seed The Gallery – (refunded) REALLY short, not that fun, not optimized, odd glitches and $30 (2hours of gameplay) for the first chapter of the game!!!!!!!!!!!
12.) Descent underground (refunded) – Runs like crap on my 4.8Ghz 980Ti-SLI PC, Multiplayer or Bots only, head movement locked to monitor refresh rate, almost made me vomit.

Anyone try the out of ammo, elite dangerous, Luca, or 5089?

I completely agree with everything you said. I was going to cancel my vive preorder until i came across this forum saying vive support was in the works.

I have played 5089, it’s a good game but i ended up returning it. The guns put the vive controller at a 90 degree angle from the barrel, unlike space pirate trainer, which sits at a more natural angle. I didn’t think i could deal with that long term.

Does the cost of Vanishing Realms cover the upcoming chapters? I read it was short, only 2 hours… so i avoided it because it’s so expensive. It does look like the coolest launch title though.

Although, none of this matters now that vorpx supports the vive. I’m reinstalling Fallout 4 now ;-)

There is no need to run games fullscreen. Running games windowed is the recommend way since the new Oculus software was released as this avoids several glitches that can occur in combination with Oculus Home when running games fullscreen.

Also please do not start games from the vorpX desktop viewer if that causes issues for you. Instead start them from your normal Windows desktop.
