  • in reply to: 200 degree fov pimax 8k and VorpX? #167388

IMPORTANT: Take everything below with a grain of salt. At this point it’s pure speculation.

Since the Pimax uses SteamVR, technically it should work.

The major caveat is the 200° FOV. From what I gathered for native apps that will be done by using two distinct left/right view frustums with ~140° per eye FOV, which won’t be possible in most cases for vorpX.

As a fallback they seem to have a 2D image scaling technique to ‘upscale’ a lower FOV to 200°. That however sounds like something you absolutely don’t want to try as it almost certainly will introduce visible distortion towards the edges of the image. The very first iterations of vorpX did something similar to enhance FOV. It was the worst idea that made its way into vorpX ever and was later removed. I don’t expect the Pimax way of doing this being any better.

Long story short, the Pimax 8K almost certainly will work with vorpX. But almost as certainly not with the full 200° FOV that are theoretically possible with the device. The theoretical maximum with a symmetrical view frustum is 180°. 150°-160° sound more sensible for vorpX considering performance, provided games allow to set the FOV as high as that. That would still be a major improvement over current headsets.

You can map the mouse wheel to trackpad clicks. If I’m not mistaken that should actually be the default mapping for the shift mapping of the right track pad on Vive wands in most games.

Odd. Try changing the menu hotkey in the config app. Maybe it’s an issue with the DEL key that doesn’t occur when you use another key.

Unfortunately the usual way that vorpX uses to separate the HUD from the rest of the rendered image doesn’t work for Oblivion.

I have an alternatative method in mind for quite a while, but for now that’s just an idea. If I had to guess I would say chances are 50:50 that this new idea will work. Keep your fingers crossed.

Not much besides trying other D3D11 Z3D profiles. I have the game in my Origin library, will be looked into before the next release.

Right now I’m still knee deep in converting/enhancing/testing all ~100 Game Optimizer profiles for the new system that applies optimized settings fully automated as part of Direct VR on game start instead of in the config app, which is a lot better in multiple ways. As soon as that rather epic endeavour is finally done, some new 3D profiles will become the fcocus for the 17.3.0 release.

vorpX cannot work when the game is running on another GPU than the one you have your headset connected to.

Please use a “normal” PC gaming setup with your monitor and the headset both connected to your dedicated GPU. vorpX will not work with any other setup.

Also launch games directly from the Windows desktop without using any vr desktop software (except maybe vorpX’s own desktop viewer).

BTW: DX12 certainly won’t work, vorpX hooks DX9-11 games.

As said above similar injection issues with multiple games almost certainly (read 99.999%) are caused by an injection conflict with some other software on your PC.

The only other options that come to mind are:

    1. If you run your games (or Steam) with admin rights for some reason, you will also have to run vorpX as admin. Otherwise vorpX does not have sufficient rights to hook into games.

    2. If you have a multi GPU setup, make sure that the games run on the same GPU that your headset is connected to

There really aren’t any other options than these if you experience the same injection problem with every game you try.

You should have received at least two e-mails from MyCommerce with the download link and instructions, also two activation reminders from us directly a little bit later.

These mails were sent automatically to the mail address that you entered into the purchase form (brent.m…@gmail.com). The reply to your support request was sent to the same mail address.

Please check your spam folder, highly unlikely that all five mails just vanished.

I will resend the reminder once again. if it still does not reach you, please provide an alternative e-mail address.

The best resolution varies from game to game, for older (and thus usually better performing) games you can choose a higher resolution than for the most recent games. It is not possible to name a general best resolution unfortunately.

You need to make sure that you still get a decent framerate (45fps+) when you change the resolution. Quality wise 1920×1440 is a good resolution, but with many newer games that may not be fast enough, so you need to find a compromise between quality and performance that works for your PC on a game to game basis.

Regarding RE7: as said in the other thread DO NOT change the resolution for this game, use the 1280×960 that vorpX suggests. If you can afford it performance wise, then change the multiplier in the game options like the message says that pops up when you start the game with vorpX.

One thing you could try is disabling Crystal Image on the image page of the vorpX ingame menu. That will reduce the size of vorpX’s internal render textures which might exceed DirectX’s max texture size in your case.

No guarantee that this will help, but it’s worth a shot.

If that does not help, there probably is nothing that can be done since the desktop viewer doesn’t really support multi-screen setups.

vorpX usually can’t change the way third person games handle their camera, that would require access to the source code of a game.

The default settings that vorpX provides for the game are dialed in to provide the correct FOV. DO NOT change any settings like Image Zoom or related settings.

Regarding image quality: did you read the message that pops up every time you the game starts? The game has an image scaling multiplier in its options that you can set to a higher value than the 1.3 vorpX automatically sets it to if your PC is fast enough to handle that.

    @ Hikari

If you see black areas around the actual image, you probably changed the Image Zoom in the vorpX menu. Please make sure that ImageZoom is set to 1.0 and Aspect Mode to “Pixel 1:1”. These are the default settings for the game.

Since you apparently already changed a lot of vorpX settings, it probably makes sense to restore the netire profile to its default values in the vorpX config app (trouble shooting page).

Also make sure that the game’s .ini files are at their default state by deleting them and restarting the game afterwards. If I understand you correctly, you changed .ini files manually. To be sure these manual edits don’t interfere with vorpX, they should be undone. Just in case.

Afterwards apply the Game Optimizer settings for the game in the vorpX config app. That will take care of the camera field of view. Changing the image zoom or any other FOV related setting will not be necessary afterwards.
