@ johnb: Thanks for posting the image, At least I can understand the issue now. Not sure at all though what might cause this. When set to portrait in Windows the image should appear in landscape orientation (hope that makes sense). If I undefstand you correctly, in your case the display is landscape, but the rendered image is rotated by 90deg. Very odd. Can you please send me a description of your PC hardware and a dxdiag.txt to support |at| vorpx com? Maybe this is an issue with certain graphics cards/drivers. You can create a dxdiag.txt with the dxdiag tool in Windows.

At least in Skyrim using Direct to HMD mode might be a workaround. That is not officially supported by vorpX, but should work in a few games, among them Skyrim.

@ marek: Please follow the advice given in the first vorpX window that appears when you start Skyrim. The FOV has to be set to value around 120, otherwise the image is zoomed in. You can make the 3D effect stronger in the vorpX ingame menu if you think it’s to weak. Just be aware that this also alters the sense of scale.

Two thoughts: 1. The DK2 has to be powered on when you launch vorpX, 2. Make sure that you have the latest firmware installed. This is just a guess, but maybe an older firmware can cause issues with the detection.

Hi Raif – The video you did with Skyrim and the DK2 looked great. I’ll probably purchase vorpx when you release it to test with my OR DK2. As a developer I completely understand its difficult to both develop and respond to impatient fans. I’m sure it’s not like you need or want any advice at this point but I’m going to throw some out there anyway. One way to placate your fans (short of a release) would be to spend a couple of minutes blogging about the challenges and progress. Takes 5 minutes and people get to vicariously take the journey with you to some extent. It’s far more efficient than responding to forum posts wanting release dates. Just my .02c. …And to those who have been wanting smaller releases this sounds good in theory but developers are often ‘wary’ of minor releases but they have to be concerned about the installer and upgrade installs and if files are not closed etc. Lots of little releases can potentially cause all sorts of support headaches. One way around this is to architect your primary memory resident executable so you can encapsulate more of your updated minor features within that one file. That way the update process has little that can fail.

As of me posting this.. vorpX DOES NOT officially support the DK2.. this is just a way to make it work.. This also works for other games that support TrackIR..

    I’m quoting my AC post…

    http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/oculus-rift-thread.1368/page-47#post-230258

    How I go this working…
To be clear this does require that you purchase vorpX and I don’t want to come off like im selling it… There is a similar free app but I couldn’t it working..
vorpX does not officially support the DK2 yet which means its somewhat buggy….
So buy it at your own risk… It works for me but may not work for you…

    Some problems…
Apps do not work – they did at first.. i think — Oddly my app works minus the menus… (works very well on the rift too)
AI does not work… I tested 1 AI – 50 AI… the game crashes trying to load the first AI car..
99.8% sure these are vorpX issues..

    My setup…
DK2 = Extended Desktop with the rift being the primary monitor
Launch AC — Set RES to 1920×1080 74/75hz
Launch vorpX – (It has crashed a few times.. just keep launching it..)
open the vorpX control panel form the system tray and change some settings
Display/Monitor drop down is set to system default
Oculus Profile is set to Do not use a profile (use the ingame app to set your IPD and vignette) (remember your IPD for later..)
    everything else leave unchecked.

TrackIR I changed the tracking to (one : one) and as always I disabled the XYZ axis because AC still has issues with those getting stuck..
    Freetrack might work..

When you launch the game you will receive an error about tracking… even though its off.. just hit enter..
Once in the game hit DEL and start changing the vorpX settings… IPD calibration tool is on the second page/tab.. this is the best way to calibrate your eyes..

If you need to edit something and you haven’t figured out how to look at the desktop cross-eyed.. just hit the power button on top of your DK2.. This will throw everything back on your main screen.. When you’re done turn the DK2 back on you’re ready to go…

Seems kinda easy reading over this but it was a pain in the butt at first… Let just say I can see very well cross-eyed now…

Lastly can also make a video if needed..

I think part of the problem was 1. the recent news update, plus 2. your past history of updating.

    1. The recent “preview” screamed as if a new version of vorpX had Skyrim working with positional tracking. I know I bought it just for that reason, and I know now others have as well. Even though it stated in the article that it technically wasn’t out. The impression gave, that it was just around the corner.

    2. From reading other comments on this forum, it seemed like you have done this before. You released the product, got a bunch of sales, and then didn’t update for a very long time. Although in this case, you didn’t release anything, and I bet you got a bump in sales with that article.

Teasing Skyrim as working with positional tracking, and then saying well I have no timeline on when it will be released, makes it appear as if you are not even close to having it ready, or your starting from scratch, which is opposite of what the recent article and video imply.

If this was free software, or much cheaper, I think most people could stomach the long release times. And I know I’ll probably get flamed for sounding impatient. But, at what point in software development, where you are taking peoples money beforehand, do you say, this isn’t right. And I am not basing this off of the DK2 update only because you are right in saying it hasn’t been that long. I am referring to vorpX since the beginning.

I think the advice given was fair. It would be better to provide smaller, more frequent updates, instead of giant releases. Having a Skyrim only update would suffice for many, since apparently you have most of it worked out according to the video. Even if things were messed up, it should still be playable, and we could look forward to updates when it is all fixed up.

I too have no way of really using your software after I bought it. No rotational or positional tracking for DK2 in any game I’ve tried.

I have no issue waiting for software, but the price of admission, and the amount of time you take to update seems dubious. I feel cheated giving $40 for something that doesn’t work much at all. I know that is my personal opinion, but I also know I am not the only person with that opinion.

I do want to say that I appreciate your customer service. It’s been really good.

PatriotLife seems to be the only one who doesn’t care when a release is. Probably because he,
    A) Doesn’t have a DK2
    B) Is waiting on a DK2
    C) Doesn’t have a DK1
    D) Doesn’t even have Vorpx
    E) Any combination of the above, OR, he is JUST a member of this forum

I know Ralf is trying very hard, but we do need little news updates every now and then. No update whatsoever from November 2013 and no blog post from December 2013. Then the video of the DK2 Vorpx update on Skyrim that didn’t specify that it was just a demo was somewhat misleading. And, when given a response of “Soon ;)” when asked by RoadtoVR.com means, to me and to many others, “I don’t have the slightest idea”. If you have an update demoing something you should release it or have a general time span/window when it is going to be released, especially when you show proof that it is working and working well. I would be satisfied knowing the 11 new games. Ralf, if you’re reading this, please release that list. It will not only real in customers, but will also satiate the anger/irritation/negative overall outlook on the lack of information.
I just want some more info. Not “All I can say today is that we will be as fast as possible.” I’m sorry that I want to be sure I didn’t spend $40 dollars on a program that may not last until the next update. I mean there could have been a release to fix shadows on Skyrim for the DK1 in the span of 9 months(November 2013 to July 31st 2014) and 5 months before the availability to pre-order the DK2. And Vorpx is so successful enough, in my opinion, to have gotten a deal with Oculus to get a DK2 way before anyone else as to be ready for the DK2 release in July. There are multiple issues here, Not just a bunch of “impatient, overly excited people wanting to use a new toy”. Granted, this is a wonderful and innovative program and has the potential to go hand in hand with CV1. But if this continues Vorpx could lose support and income before that happens.

After reading an article about the latest vorpx working with DK2 head tracking and skyrim and praising how great the 3d effects were in bioshock infinite I immediately came here and bought it. Nothing in the article about it being a special build they were using, the said the latest version. So I was disappointed to learn that what was reviewed wasn’t available for me to try. It seems somewhat misleading the article should have said they got a special test preview that isn’t yet available, because I too was a bit peeved when the latest vorpx available 0.64 wasn’t even compiled against SDK 0.40. That being said I am not going to ask for any refund and will support Ralph. I guess he’s a one man team and must be getting little sleep trying to fix things he’s not satisfied with releasing in current state. All of this stuff is pretty groundbreaking, I waited since may for my DK2. We are early adopters and I plan to learn how to develop for it as well, but right now I am more interested in using the tech and as an early adopter we just got to sit tight and hope when the new vorpx is released we will think it was worth the wait.

Hi just got vorpx and decided to try find some emulators that work with it.
Seen a thread on here showing how to use n64 playstation 2 and and gamecube.

Just found another one SSF sega Saturn emulator that works with vorpX and oculus rift.

Get it there and use that site to help set it up.
Its a bit of a hassle getting to work as you need to use actual cds or use a virtual drive like daemon tools.
I will write a guide tomorrow because its a bit late now.
Here`s a wee quick video of it working.

I just got my DK2 today. and at the moment it does not work at all with the three games I’ve tried in “Direct HMD Access from Apps” mode (ARMA III, Mirrors Edge, and Skyrim). And it has major problems in “Extend Desktop to the HMD” mode. In ARMA III, the game launches, but the game is not projecting two images and there seems to be problem with the colors as well. I also can’t access the in game menu because my mouse wont travel to that part of the screen for some reason. In Mirrors Edge the game just doesn’t launch after a “Head tracking init failed” error. In Skyrim it gives that same head tracking error as well as “failed to initialize renderer”.

I was so excited when it arrived today, but now I am bummed because I can’t get a single game to work on it.

Skyrim: In case you use any mods, please try a fresh and modless (vanilla) install first, and install your mods again one by one afterwards. The vast majority of mods will work fine with vorpX, but there are so many of them that it is impossible to tell whether some might cause issues. Mods that use the Skyrim Script Extender or ‘ENB mods’ are likely candidates for causing trouble.

For Far Cry 3 the following things might be worth to check:

    1. Disable the in-game overlay in Uplay, otherwise you might get a black screen on startup.
    2. Switch from DX9 to DX11 or vice versa. Maybe one works better for you.
    3. The game sometimes seems to require several tries until vorpX hooks correctly unfortunately. Starting the game multiple times should suffice, you probably do not have to restart vorpX.

Generally please check for the following things (some of that you might have done already):

    1. Just in case: make sure that you run vorpX Control, not vorpX Config. It shows a tray icon in the taskbar when it is running.

    2. If you use more than one monitor, check whether disconnecting the additional monitor(s) helps.

    3. Make sure to set Windows display config to clone mode and vorpX monitor config to ‘Use system settings’ (which is the default).

    4. If still nothing works after verifying that, there is a high probability that something on your PC interferes with vorpX. This might be a virus scanner, anything that can show content over games (for example chat programs like Skype, Mumble, X-Fire, Evolve etc.), or a special display driver. Please disable all such programs temporarily.

    5. If you didn’t do that already, please take a look at the trouble shooting sticky above.

If you still have similar issues with multiple games afterwards, please write a mail to support |at| vorpx com for some individual trouble shooting, including basic system specs and the games you tried.

After some googling & tinkering I found the killer setup together with up to 6 degrees of freedom headtracking (meaning you can lean forward to read your cockpit instruments from up close, you can go up with your body to look above the cockpit, you can lean left/right etc.):

You need two instances of opentrack open at the same time (because the SimConnect protocol is broken on the latest versions, which however offer the best Rift headtracker support, I’m using both a new and an old version, which I connect to each other via UDP protocol).

First instance: opentrack 2.0a8 (“server” instance):
    – Main tracker: Rift (leave all axes activated)
    – Auxiliary tracker: aruco (aruco works by scotch taping a printed symbol to the front of your Rift. Your webcam (I use a PS3 Eye) will pick it up and calculate your position). Disable following axes on this tracker: RX, RY, RZ, TX (as I do not want horizontal movement to place me outside the plane ;-))
    – Game protocol: UDP (use IP 127.0.0.1, port 5550, and allow in Firewall)
    – Axis inversion: TY
    – Make sure all curves are linear and “translation compensation” is disabled
    – Map Ctrl-Shift-Z to “center” key

Second instance: opentrack 2.0a6 24 (“client” instance):
    – Main tracker: UDP (use IP 127.0.0.1, port 5550, and allow in Firewall)
    – Auxiliary tracker: None
    – Game protocol: SimConnect
    – No axis inversion
    – Make sure all curves are linear and “translation compensation” is disabled
    – Map Ctrl-Alt-Z to “center” key

    How to go ahead:
    – Run “server” instance, push start button
    – Run FSX/Prepar3d (works in both), skip error message that headtracker is already in use by another application (this is what we want ;-))
When in cockpit, center view by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Z and Ctrl-Alt-Z
    – Run “client” instance, push start button (you need to at least run “stop, start” as soon as you are inside your cockpit for FSX to activate the SimConnect tracking)
    – Enjoy FSX in 5 degrees of freedom (6 if you also enable TX axis in aruco on “server” instance => as mentioned I prefer to disable it not to be placed outside my cockpit)

aruco needs sufficient light to be directed at the printed symbol attached to the front of your Rift (just place a lamp in front of you, won’t bother your view as you wear the Rift anyway).

aruco allows you to use a number of printed symbols for the tracking, however I am using http://www.outerra.com/images/787.svg (just printed from this page in the browser => credits to Brano Kemen => http://outerra.blogspot.be/2013/08/absolute-positioning-with-oculus-rift.html ).

Also make sure you pick the highest refresh rate for the camera as possible (I am using settings of 120Hz and 640×480 resolution in the camera setup of aruco, in the preview window I get around 70-80Hz).

Hope it helps & cheers ;-)

I just tried the official HL2 VR support and it’s pretty bad compared to Quakespasm and the OR Demo.

I was wondering what people say about how VorpX handles it.

If there was a simple trial I could probably make the decision for myself, or I could fork over the money to beta test vorpx, but here is hoping someone will share first hand experiences if at all possible. ( I don’t know if beta testers had to sign an NDA or something…).

With the official support the game is a little slow. My mouse cursor was feeling delayed. Even with no acceleration.

The menus were almost not readable except for the options menu because it was centered.

The game world had tons of strange flickering going on that I don’t even know how to describe. Lots of things were blurry.

The official HL2 support only supports 1200×800 but in Quakespasm I was playing on 1600×900 fine and it looked much better than 1200×800. Maybe that’s why it looks so blurry in HL2? Can VorpX play HL2 in 1600×900?

That’s all I can think of for now. I’ve heard a lot about vorpx that can allow to look at corners of the screen.

Hi there I was trying to use the vorpx with Black Mesa Source and Deus Ex Human Revolution ( STEAM )

I only have games from Steam.

I first tried to make the desktop shortcut and it didn’t work.
Then I tried to re-install the game and it didn’t work too.
I disabled my Antivirus software and it didn’t work.

I am not using any kind of Trainer or Hacks.
I am not using any kind of recording Software or plugin such as Google Hangout.

    Please I need help!

here is my System Spec just in case

    Windows 8 Premium x64
    Intel i5-3330 3.00GHz
    Geforce GTX 650 ti
    8GB DDR3

    Additional information
All my games on Steam are on my second Partition of my Hard Drive (D:). But Vorpx is on my First Partition(C:). I don’t know if it does anything.

I can not move my games to C: because it is lacking space.

I only used this twice and now when I try to start it I just get the spinning timer. The program no longer loads I have updated my avast and will see if it is that. Even if it is avast this program needs fixing because I’ll be damned if I am going to keep my virus program switched off. I will have to uninstall Avast just to see if it is that because Avast stays on and you are unable to exit it. Any advice on this??????
