ParticipantI run a 3080 Ti and Alyx, TWD Saints and Sinners, Assetto Corsa, and a few others I can run at Wide FOV at 100% Steam SS or greater and at very high quality settings.
Sorry but I don’t believe it. I have all these games and a 3080 and I know there’s just no way. Maybe with reprojection. You only get smooth FPS in Alyx because it changes your resolution dynamically according to your performance so you’re not really running 100% SS there.
It wasn’t necessarily easy to get there, but yes, I do indeed get those resolutions and frame-rates. My 3080 Ti is a factory OC model that stays right around 2ghz under heavy load. . Assuming you aren’t CPU bound, however, you may be able to do something similar. Note that at one point I had to do a complete clean reinstall. Old PiTool versions or possibly even Windows updates had messed things up so badly that it was killing my performance.
Here are the titles I can run at Full FOV with no “Smart Smoothing” (I keep a spreadsheet of settings since getting this stuff all working right on Pimax equipment is such a PITA):
Alyx runs at 109% Steam SS at 90 fps except in one single battle scene (Fred? What’s that things name?) That’s with the auto-resolution setting left on and (you can defeat it through an ini tweak). You can also tweak it so you can see which resolution-setting you are actually getting real-time in the HMD. If I run at 75hz or 60hz I get additional clarity, as the title can use the higher-resolution modes more often, but it will maintain 90fps if I prefer the smoothness. IMHO this title is the way all VR games should work. It’s simply amazing how smoothly it transitions up and down those 5(?) resolution modes. If you don’t have it, make sure you use the tweaks for Alyx that remove the PP requirement.
TWDS&S runs at 90fps at 120% in-game SS, 75fps at 130%, and 60fps at 140% (resolution has a HUGE effect as you can see).
AC runs at 60fps at 104% Steam SS, but I don’t need any more performance than that for a seated racing sim. That’s with SOL+CSP+Rain effects at night with tons of special effects. If I wasn’t using all that eye-candy AC would easily hit 90fps and stay there.
Other titles I also run at Wide FOV at 100% or greater Steam SS with no smart smoothing are Dirt Rally 2 and Into the Radius. AFAIK you’ll never get *any* game that requires PP to run at Wide FOV at 90fps at 100% Steam SS. At least, nothing I’ve ever tried will do that. Dirt Rally 2 requires PP and I get 60fps at Wide FOV, 100% SS.
In terms of vorpX performance, that wipe and completely clean reinstall did wonders. I had all kinds of performance issues creep into my rig over time, and they hit vorpX performance worst of all. If you have a second drive you can play with, you might try setting that up as a boot drive, doing a clean install of Windows with only the most basic software you need to get things working, and do a test run to see if you suddenly get a massive performance uplift.
Also, Shadows are often a bigger performance hog than one might expect. In nearly all the title I’ve mentioned I probably have Shadows set to Medium or lower and I’ve also probably turned down particles, so it’s not like I’m getting that performance at Ultra settings across the board. I can usually get away with the highest quality textures and meshes however (if controls for such are available,) which I find very important.
I do wonder, however, how in the world we are going to drive the 12K (if it even becomes a real thing). That’s so many more pixels, and I just can’t stand less than 100% Steam SS, even with something like the VRPERFKIT installed for upscaling. To my eyes the image just falls apart at anything less than that. Here is hoping a 4090 can actually drive a 12K at 100% SS.

ParticipantMaking your own vorpX profile is usually the better option and fairly easy if you know what engine a game uses, which is Unreal Engine 4 in case of Stray. Caveat: Some UE4 games are DX12 only these days. If there is no 3D with one of the many DX11 UE4 profiles try the Grounded profile as a base.
I second this. Whenever possible it’s best to go the vorpX route – it’s simply faster than the other solutions. For example Witcher 3 (first person mod) pushed to 8K-X at 4K and every slider at max quality give a liquid smooth 60fps and can often maintain 75fps in vorpX Z3D. Virtual Desktop + SuperDepthVR can also be used, but even getting a solid 60fps requires quality concessions and a slightly lower resolution. So there is a substantial performance difference in many titles between vorpX and the alternatives.
That said, I’ve been using SuperDepth3D (and now VR) almost since the initial release and they are a good alternative when vorpX doesn’t yet support a title. I hope Ralf, that you understand that we like to sometimes discuss alternatives for when vorpX doesn’t support a title yet? If you prefer not, then let us know and I expect most of us here will abide by your decision.

Participant@TheLastStarfighter Z3D in-general has come a LONG way over the past five years or so. I also used to be absolutely unable to tolerate it in any title and could only use G3D. But vorpX and other solutions now offer some pretty good Z3D, sometimes extremely good. It is very game-engine dependent though. Definitely give it a try, and be willing to work a while with the settings. Title that come to mind off the top of my head that look fantastic in vorpX Z3D are Greedfall, Dragon Age Inquisition (and thus probably Mass Effect Andromeda, although I have not tried it yet), and The Witcher 3 with the first-person mod. Those titles are all excellent. (Witcher 3 could use a little more depth, but it’s OK, the other two have fantastic depth with surprisingly few Z3D artifacts.)

ParticipantI remember being interested in this game at the time, but the terrible, terrible, reviews completely ruled it out. I’ll have to reconsider at some point since it seems the VRified experience is much better.
I still have a functioning Atari Jaguar in my retro gaming setup, with the original AvP, so the nostalgia factor of ACM alone might make it worthwhile.

ParticipantJust a ‘kudos’ to Ralf for including this feature, which I also use semi-routinely. It’s nice sometimes just to kick back and play on my 3D monitor instead of bothering with the HMD, and there are a number of titles (complex keyboard and mouse titles), where it would be bothersome to play the game on the HMD anyway. It’s great to, with the change of a single setting, switch to using my montior.
So, thanks Ralf. Also, I did notice your “You’re Welcome” message you put in OSD when using that mode. Made me laugh.

ParticipantA couple things I’ve noticed:
1) We are really close to a ‘full VR conversion’ already with this mod.
2) Primary issues are G3D shadow issues. The game runs well enough a lot of people could probably hit 60fps in G3D mode, but the profile is not good enough to use.
3) Z3D does work reasonably well however; just play with the setting a lot as the title provides less depth than most in Z3D (I have to push it to max depth in order to get enough to be acceptable)
4) Head tracking works pretty well, my only issue being that it causes momentary instabilities when in mouse mode and I absolutely can’t get the Y Axis to invert (to normal since I play with the stick ‘inverted’)
6) Use it with Post Processing AA, Motion Blur and Blur. I don’t generally like those, but with anything else, and any sharpening at all (either vorpX on in-game), this game gets very shimmery very quickly.mr_spongeworthy
Participant@fubar – Generally speaking you are correct, but there are exceptions. Very well done games will take full advantage of the 8K-X even on today’s cards. I run a 3080 Ti and Alyx, TWD Saints and Sinners, Assetto Corsa, and a few others I can run at Wide FOV at 100% Steam SS or greater and at very high quality settings.
Assetto Corsa especially shines with SOL + CSP + Rain Effects. It’s almost beyond believing how amazing that looks. I enjoy driving around the ring, at night, in thunderstorms, with fireworks.
It’s times like that which make the Pimax HMDs worth the incredible PITA it can be getting everything working right.
I’m cautiously optimistic about the 12k, I hope Pimax has most of the kinks worked out; I would love to see CP2077 on that puppy though vorpX!

ParticipantAfter playing with this the latest revisions of this mod I’ve got to say it’s absolutely brilliant. There are a number of modules to make combat easier/better in 1st person, although I do recommend installing Slow Motion Button as well, as 1st person combat is harder than 3rd person in this title.
I’m getting almost 75pfs at 4K in-game resolution and all settings maxed; I expect a little tweaking will allow me to maintain 75fps. It’s hard to get this title to have enough clarity without texture shimmer, but it can be done (In-game sharpening set to OFF and vorpX sharpening set very low.) This is on a Pimax 8k-X, so on most HMDs you’ll likely be able to maintain 90fps without much effort.
I hope you’ll consider a full-VR makeover of W3 now that we have an excellent, working, 1st person mode already.

Participant@ToxicMike; Yeah, it’s a sad state. I have a great 3D Optima projector that I still use, but setup on this stuff is simply beyond most people. You’ve really got to be an enthusiast to be doing 3D. Maybe the next Avatar releases will ignite the scene again. Personally, I’ve loved 3D movies since way back, and I haven’t ‘pancake’ gamed since I picked up a 3D solution for GT5 on the PS3. Never looked back and never will.

Participant@Ghost75757 vorpX definitely has issues with Reshade, sometimes. It does seem to depend on the specific game. Sometimes it will even warn you it won’t work, but then does. If, for some reason, I prefer SuperDepth 3D / VR in a certain title I’ll usually just switch over to Virtual Desktop (avail. on Steam) instead of the vorpX Desktop Viewer. That solution didn’t used to work well because Virtual Desktop was much, much slower than vorpX. But now it’s pretty close. Overall, if the vorpX solution works, it’s usually best to just go that route as it’s easier to setup and a bit faster. I do have some titles however that definitely benefit, for whatever reason, from the SuperDepth solution. And of course, in your case, it sounds like you are running games unsupported directly by vorpX anyway. BTW, switch over to the VR version of SuperDepth; includes AMD sharpening, nice.

ParticipantAh, bummer, although it makes sense that it couldn’t get much better without being baked into the games themselves.

ParticipantCheck out some of the side-by-side comparisons on YouTube. It’s looking really excellent, that’s for sure. So much crisper than DLSS and only slightly more jaggies. DLSS having so little aliasing may be due to DLSS being intrinsically linked to TAA? If FSR 2.0 isn’t linked to TAA that would be a huge win for FSR 2.0 over DLSS as TAA is always a blurry detail-destroying mess.
It’ll be amazingballs if Ralf can get FSR 2.0 wedged into vorpX.

ParticipantSure. Your photo mode issue is not forgotten. I didn’t have a chance to check that yet though. No promises, but if I can replicate and fix the issue, I will do so before the next update.
Mine does this as well; immediate crash upon entering Photo Mode. I believe it started with the first stand-alone version of your mod (i.e. I *think* I could access Photo Mode fine when we still launched Cyberpunk normally as we would any other vorpX supported title.)

ParticipantI agree with Ralf that this is likely a VRAM issue; The only thing that routinely brings my 3080Ti to its knees is when it hits this limit. It will drop from 90fps to 20, or 18, or whatever but then it never recovers the way it should. Performance just continues to drop until eventually the game or the HMD crashes. It’s a really frustrating problem that only occurs when I’m pushing flat games to VR (not just through vorpX, same thing happens to me with other solutions). I expect it’s some interaction between the GPU drivers, steam VR, etc. This never happens to me with VR Native titles or when pushing games to my monitor (even in 3D). Those solutions work normally and all I get is a brief blip in performance while stuff swaps between VRAM and system RAM.

ParticipantI have very good luck with the SBS mode overall and pretty frequently switch to it for certain titles where 3D is really the entire point. I mean, there really isn’t any reason to play a title like Greedfall in a HMD and you’re just putting hours on an expensive piece of equipment.
Even though it’s just a good-faith add-on I’m very happy with it. Only downside is that I find Over/Under is FAR better on my display. I think that’s pretty common; something with the way our eyes perceive detail. I have to use massive amounts of downsampling to get a good result out of SBS mode; as in render the title at 4k and downsample to my 1080p display. In O/U mode it’s fine as low as 1080p native title rendering (although more is always better of course).
Hoping you someday add O/U mode; in theory it should be pretty easy to do.
