Sep 25, 2014 at 11:42am in reply to: Average FPS in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim on GTX970/980? #18042
RalfKeymasterThe Geometry 3D performance hit is about the same as with all stereo drivers (usually 50%-60%, in some cases even more). Some things a S3D driver has to do are hurting peformance a lot , especially in DX9 games. There is no real way away around that, except something like asynchronous timewarp. Whether that will be possible in vorpX isn’t clear yet though.
Skyrim is mostly CPU-bound in Geometry 3D, a faster card won’t help much. In Fallout you should be able to get 75fps in interiors and ~60fps outside with a GTX 970.
That is why vorpX has the Z-Buffer 3D mode, which is about twice as fast as Geometry 3D, although not as natural in regard to Stereo 3D, of course.
RalfKeymasterPlease try to disable you antivirus program temporarily, this will probably solve your issue. Some AV-programs for whatever reason seem to disable the clipboard in the vorpX license dialog.
RalfKeymasterThe web installer is enough. The purpose of the web downloader is to allow you to always install the latest version without any extra-hassle.
RalfKeymasterThe IPD value as computed by vorpX isn’t correct on the DK2 currently. What you did is correct though. If it feels right, meaning it does not cause eye strain, it’s probably the correct value.
The best method is to have your IPD measured by an optometrist. That is clearly superior to any digital calibration, but probably not really necessary.
RalfKeymasterThe last version of vorpX is about 4 (four!) weeks old and the list of substantial bugfixes/changes since then has about 40 entries as of now. I wouldn’t exactly call that ‘eternal holiday’.
RalfKeymasterFor the DoF effect multiple samples per pixel are required in the pixel shader where normally would be only one, so this is costly. How high the performance hit exactly is depends on whether performance in a game is CPU or GPU bound, so it’s different from game to game and also from PC to PC.
RalfKeymasterGeometry 3D shadows will be fixed with the next update. Due to a bug the current fix does not work reliably.
RalfKeymasterMouse smoothing should best be avoided since it adds to head tracking latency.
If you wish to, you can use the vorpX head tracking smoothing for a similar effect. The first three or four steps should be OK in regard to added latency.
Sep 22, 2014 at 9:04pm in reply to: Dirt 3 hook not working – fresh install (Dirt 2 is woking though)…any ideas? #17970
RalfKeymasterFor most games you don’t have to set the DK2 as primary monitor. If you haven’t done so already, please check the DK2 setup guide in the documentation. It explains how to setup vorpX with the DK2 as secondary monitor. Normally ~90% of games should work this way.
Dirt3: One thing you could try is switching from DX9 to DX11 or vice versa. Normally both should hook, but maybe one works better for you. (DX9 is preferred due to Geometry 3D support)
For Dirt 3 there is a Game Optimizer entry in the vorpX config app that allows you to switch to DX9 automatically.
in case the Game Optimizer fails for some reason, you can also do this manually:
1. Open [My Documents]\My Games\Dirt3\hardwaresettings\hardware_settings_config.xml with a text editor
2. Search for forcedx9=”false”
3. Change the line to forcedx9=”true”
4. Save the file
RalfKeymasterThree things you should check:
1. If you use Windows 8, you may have to set the orientation of the DK2 to “Landscape flipped” instead of “Portrait”.
2. Do not use an Oculus profile in the vorpX config app. Instead dial in the IPD manually. You may have to set it a bit lower than your real IPD. This will be fixed soon.
3. Make sure to set all games to fullscreen and 1920×1080 on the DK2 before starting them with vorpX
RalfKeymasterPlease send a mail to support |at| vorpx com.
RalfKeymasterThere is a bug currently that prevents Arma 3 from working correctly. Will be fixed soon. For a temporary workaround please check this post: https://www.vorpx.com/forums/topic/how-to-setup-arma3-and-the-dk2/#post-17814
RalfKeymasterI used the Morrowind Overhaul 2.0 IIRC. The DX9 patch that was used was MGE XE, I think you can select several MGE versions in the Overhaul install.
Installing MGE XE alone (available at Morrowind Nexus for example) should be enough to get DX9 support. You won’t get all the other mods of the Overhaul, but to check whether things work in general it might be best to use MGE XE without any other mods first anyway.
RalfKeymasterThat is definitely not how it is supposed to work. Games should be set to 1920×1080 for vorpX on the DK2.
Just in case: Did you follow the DK2 setup guide in the vorpX documentation completely? At least the compatible option mentioned there should definitely work.
The two options are:
The most compatible option to setup vorpX with the DK2:
1. Set the DK2 to Extend Desktop in the Oculus Config Utility.
2. Use your DK2 as PRIMARY display in Windows.
3. Set vorpX to “Use system settings” display wise. The more convenient, but not as compatible, option:
1. Set the DK2 to Extend Desktop in the Oculus Config Utility.
2. Use your DK2 as SECONDARY display in Windows.
3. Set vorpX to “Show only on Rift DK2” display wise. The setup guide has additional images.
RalfKeymasterOne addition to what epengr says:
If you use Windows 8, you might have to set the orientation of the DK2 to “Landscape flipped” instead of “Portrait”, otherwise you get a way to small image. Your description sounds pretty much like this could be the case.
